  1. Most of the MPEG multiplexing softwares I tried have the following 2 issues:
    - Doesn't provide a correct mux rate for DVD video. My DVD authoring software would not use the MPEG file as is. It would demuxes, and muxes the files with a mux rate of 1008000 bits/s.
    - Lack of batch operation. I have to mux the pairs one by one and it is time consuming.
Does any one know of an affordable MPEG multiplexer which doesn't have those 2 issues listed above ? Thanks for any information.

Have you checked out Canopus Procoder http://www.canopus.us/us/products/procoder/pt_procoder.asp

It's not cheap, but it is one of the best media conversion programs around. prodcues excellent quality MPEG2 streams.

BBmpeg is what you are looking for. Its a completely freeware multiplexor that can be run in batch mode. It also lets you set the mux rate to whatever you want or you can set it to 0 for automatic. Better get the XP patch if you run Windows XP and you better read the bbmpeg cutting guide on this site (multiplexing works almost exactly like cutting, just don't set any cut points). It is not at all an intuitive program to use, but after reading the guide its very simple.

Also, what DVD Authoring software are you using? I don't see why a mux rate of 1008000 bits/s would be required unless you totally maxed out your bitrate.

  4. Yes, I use Procoder routinely. Although it is a good program for MPEG2 encoding, it produces MPEG2 system stream with non standard mux rate. ( The standard mux rate for DVD video should be 10080000 bit/s ). It doesn't provide MPEG tools for even simple mutiplexing. The only software I found so far with the correct mux rate is the Discreet Cleaner . But it doesn' have a batch multiplexing tool.

  5. Thanks Adam. I downloaded bbmpeg and tried it out. I succeeded the first part of my wish: multiplexing with a mux rate of 10080000 bits/s and my authoring software no longer complain about it. But I have a little problem to multiplex several pairs of files in batch mode ( I checked the run in batch mode check box but nothing happened ). What I could do was to open several bbmpeg windows and entered the input/ouput files in each windows and hit the start button one by one to multiplex several files at the same time. Is this the way it is supposed to do for batch multiplexing ?
By the way, I use Video Pack 5.1 as my authoring software. Roxio discontinued this software. I know, it is not the best authoring software, but I like some of the features in this software and that is why I am still using it. The software always want a mux rate of 10080000 bits/s no matter what the video stream rate is. I checked several commercial DVDs, the mux rates are indeed 10080000 bits/s.

Tried mplex? (Included in the DVDAuthor package GUI)

  7. As I know, MPLEX is for MPEG1 only.

Nope. As it's one of the cornerstones in the DVDAuthorGUI package, I'd be very surprised if that was the case... 8)

I guess BBmpeg's batch mode really only works as one would think for encoding. Reading the very limited help file it says the batch mode for multiplexing only makes it automatically start multiplexing without having to hit start, and close when finished? Seems like a silly function to me. I couldn't get it to do actual batch multiplexing either. Sorry, I thought it could. I never had a need for it but just assumed that that was what the batch encode option did.

I love the Video Pack series of authorers. Very simple and streamlined layouts without all the tooltips and fluffy buttons that just get in the way. I love the node system of authoring. Its so much easier to use, most people just can't be bothered to learn it. But my memory of Video Pack 4.0 was that it was overly picky about the source file. Even a compliant mpg could not be authored correctly unless you did other things to it, ie: insert extra sequence headers etc...I think that may also be your situation with the mux rate and your DVD authoring.

  10. One more fault I found with bbMPEG : The DVDs authored by files multiplexed with bbMPEG at 10080000 bits/s played well at normal speed , but could not be fast forwarded ( jump back to menu if do that ). I have never encountered this problem with files multiplexed by Video Pack.
So... back to where I was : Using TMPEGenc to do "quasi" batch multiplexing ( by open several windows at the same time ), multiplex at the wrong mux rate, and let Video Pack correct the mux rate while authoring.
