Well all the time and effort you have put into building your PC it may be worth buying a copy if the software (Windows XP Pro)
After all its not trailware/shareware and like it or not an OS is something we all must get along with and if its worth having its worth paying for .... or contact microsoft for further assistance

  4. 1st of all is the copty of XP you have an UPGRADE or full-blown retail copy? If it is an UPGRADE, the process may be different.

Here are some things to try assuming it may be hardware related ...

    1. If you are Overclocking your XP-1800+ set it all at default settings (133MHz FSB and AUTO for Multiplier)

    2. Set all BIOS settings to SAFE SETTINGS

    3. Make sure that you H/S is mounted properly and that temps are OK.

** Too much heat can cause problems such as L2 data corruption which can manifest itself as disk corruption or corrupted CAB files.

    4. Verify that your VDimm (RAM Voltage) settings in BIOS are as specified by the RAM MFG. Many DDR400 chips require higher than the default VDimm voltage. Ex: My Kingston DDR requires 2.6v as opposed to the standard 2.5v

    5. Try to install Windows w/ only 1 stick of RAM. If you get an error, remove and install the other stick of RAM.

** Faulty or incorrect settings on RAM can manifest itself as disk corruption or corrupted CAB files during install.

    6. Re-partition and Format your drive and ensure that you are doing a clean install.

  6. Are you formatting to FAT32 with your WIN98 boot disk and then installing Win98? If this is an UPGRADE purchase of XP -- you need to have the Win98 installed first.

  7. Firstly Banger Let me applozise for thinking it wasnt an orginal copy of XP

Are you installing from the original disk ...?

Is the HD set to master ? or CS ? and is it on a ide card promise etc ? or what ide is it on 1 or 2 ?

Have you been to WD and checked the drive out with any test software freely avalible from them ?

just throwing ideas about Banger just need to know a little more about your setup to help out

  8. Have you disabled Boot virus checking (aka Trend Chip Away) in BIOS?
If that is enabled, the boot sector cannot be written to the drive during setup, and nothing will work.

  13. boot from the xp cd and load in the recovery console and...
Type "chkdsk /r" then enter without the "quotes"
When done type "exit" and hit enter.

Now try a fresh clean install formatting the drive to ntfs ( NOT Quick format)

from a few searches ive seen this to be a small problem with a few WD drives but the above seams to work to install XP

I overclocked an old system I had one time and when I got it up to one certain point it did something like you explain here. I could boot to DOS from a floppy. I had access to my HDD but I couldn't get into Windows. I turned the system back down and found I now had to reinstall Windows. My install was lunched. I'm not saying you are overclocking it but maybe for some reason the system is running like it is.

    O'well. Just a though
    Good luck.

  15. Don't know what kind of vidcard you have or whether this is the problem -- but here goes ...

I had a similar problem with a via based mobo and a Gainward 64MB GF3. WinXP install would crater while coping/extracting files. I tried everything that would be considered appropriate and no luck.

Finally pulled the vidcard and installed an old GF2 and it installed error free. Just to make sure I was not losing my mind, I re-installed the GF3 and tried to re-install XP and it once again would crash during copying/extracting WinXP.

I finally installed with the GF2 and after install was complete, swapped to the GF3. Everything ran fine.

Something to try. I would have posted this out earlier, but it was just too weird and not likely. It seems we are getting to the weird and not likely stage at this point !!

    Good Luck!

right folk thank you for your help put nothing has worked .
i am waiting for wd to get back with me (ring me back)me think got them stump.
right here goes early xp pro and xp home does not work on new hardware eg large hdd ,fast hdd and new ram 400fsb 333fsb ect ,you will need most off them to get the bug.you will nead to put sp1in for them to work right .
you can not get it to work once you get unmountable boot volune and if you do it will happen again.
microsoft says run chkdsk (space) /r to fix it but it only works once if you are lucky .
and run fixmbr and fixboot again not all ways work (did not for me )
and gat a new and better ide cable (udma one ata133 or better)
win 98se and win2000 do not have the bug they should work fine not tryed win me (do not like it)
its all down to the creche not puting things inorder when wrighting to it,
slowing the pc down in bios do not work aswell (like i say not for me any where)
hope i have not upset any one it's what i have found out from pcworld ,it technions ,microsoft and people how have got this bug , and searching the net .no one has fixed it yet to my nowing apart from using a new os with sp1 on it.
like i sayed thank you and all idears are welcome
