  1. I tried out a few real time encoders like ympeg and ffvfw. Now I can't do anything but capture in 16bit RGB with it. I have uninstalled those codecs, reinstalled virtualdub and rebooted but it still won't work. Damn...

Sounds like you deleted VFW system files. There's no simple fix. How did you uninstall?

One with the uninstaller that came with it, the other through the "remove program" icon in the control panel....

I had a same accident yersterday myself...
Virtualdub worked perfect before, then suddently couldn't grabb a thing (after unistall some codecs). In the matter of fact, also killed my system each time I tried to use it for capture....
I had more than a month to do "format C" on that PC, so I did. Now everything works perfect, except virtualdub.... Not something to matter through, I can grabb with virtualvcr (I use w2k), but it make me wonder why the hell virtualdub don't capture any more. I mean, I install anything the same way again, even the tweaks which are needed to make virtualdub work with wdm @ w2k. Why it crash my system?
It is the chaos theory I say, the trip to hell we daily do in this hobby! Now I'm reading in a hardware forum that it is a ....motherboard problem, because of the VIA drivers! And yes, I actually updated that f*cking via drivers, and I can't recall which was the older (working with my mobo...) ones. Chaos theory I say...

depends on how old ur board is SatStorm but i always find v4.29 works great with win2k - sp4 http://www.viaarena.com/?PageID=344
It appears that the CPU was operating so fast that it began to execute instructions before they arrived. This execution of future instructions created a small tear in space-time itself through which part of the cpu passed into a parallel universe

  7. I have had weird things like that happen to me too, especially when I was new to this sort of stuff. Applications that were working fine would suddenly pack in, and leave me unable to do a thing.

I've got it sorted for now, though. I wonder why things do this?

  8. I use Windows 2000 with a ATI Rage 128 Pro VIVO, and it didn't come with "Video for Windows WDM Wrapper". After some checking, i found the solution at the VirtualDub site. I did this a couple times over six months (when i had to reload, because of hardware problems), i decided that i needed an easier way.....so i made this "INF file".

This makes the change show up in "Add-Remove" programs, and don't blame me if it screws something up.

Just copy the text below (minus the start and end part), and paste it into notepad. Then you must rename it to "VFWWDM2K.inf", and place it in a folder named "VfwWdmWr" or your system won't be able to find it when you 'right-click / install'.

Also the file; vfwwdm32.dll, must be in the C:\WINNT\system32\ directory.
(Its a Windows supplied file with Win2k SP2 and later)

    Reboot and it should work.
(that is if your problem is that you accidently uninstalled the VFWWDM wrapper)

Well, I do Format C any other month & I use only w2k on my PCs. So this little inf file, save me some time (than tweeking myself w2k for virtualdub)
    Also I downloaded Via's 4in1 version 429.
    I'll test both ASAP!

Thanks you both for your efforts and help!
