Anyone use the ADVC-100 to capture directly to mpeg2?

I'm still a novice when it comes to mine and only use it as it was intended (ie. DV avi), but has anyone manged to use it in conjunction with real time mpeg2 captures?
If so, what success did you have?
    What programme and codec?
    Many thanks,
Will Hay, hoping he hasn't just asked the dumbest question of the decade

    Will Hay,

The latest version of the MainConcept standalone encoder has a capture utility that does this. It permits buffering so that you don't get any dropped frames. It also permits VBR encoding and not just CBR like most other apps. As far as quality, you'd have to judge for yourself. I didn't like it very much--but again, I don't like the encodes from the MainConcept encoder in general, which is why I don't use it. There are other apps (e.g. PowerVCR, WinDV, etc.) that do the same. I tried a couple trial versions of these 6 months ago or so, didn't like the results, and deleted them from my system.

In any case, IMO the best quality will always be to capture first to DV, do your editing (which is easy in DV unlike MPEG), and then encode to MPEG. May take a bit longer, but the quality is better, and you've already got the necessary tools.

    Just my opinion.

I don't use the Canopus, but I do use an ADS pyro A/V.
Same thing, they're both IEEE boxes.

Intervideo's Winproducer 3 allows you to do this, and it works quite
well. Personally, I prefer going first to DV avi, for editing purposes.
    (mpg is not edit friendly)

Yeah, I'm well aware of the benefits of avi, it's been a long road, it's all I've ever done
I would just like the option to 'capture' mpeg2 when I'm not overly worried that I'm not getting the best I can.
    Thanks for the pointers,
    Will

  5. Hey Will, I thought I heard somewhere that Ulead Media Studio Pro 7, Ulead DVD Movie Factory 2, and Pinnacle Studio 8 can also capture MPEG2 directly from a DV source. I have an ADVC-100 on order and I should have it in another couple of weeks. When I get it I will test these apps to see if any of them can do real time MPEG2 captures with the ADVC-100 and report my findings here.

I've been looking at this. They (MF, VS7) capture from a 1394 device (and not from a PVR-250; I tried) then do a transcoding step after you end capture. Not exactly direct-to-MPEG-2 capture, but, pretty automated (and you can select VBR or CBR and LPCM audio, which you can't on the PVR-250 as far as I know).

WinDV does capture to MPEG-2? I see only options for capture to DV AVI...

Sorry. It's WinDVD Recorder from Intervideo and not WinDV. Like I said, it's been awhile back.

Do you know what audio format that encodes to? Trying to encode MPEG-2 files with AC3 or LPCM instead of MP2 audio. Thanks.

I did and so far that was the only time it worked. It's probably because of the 4 gb limit I have using WIN98SE.
