  1. Ok, I have a ripped VOB file. Using womble's mpeg-vcr, I demux'ed it, and got a .mpv & .mpa stream. Then I demux'ed it with tmpgenc plus and got a .m2v & .ac3 stream! Now this is the same VOB file, why are these programs giving me different streams? (no settings have been touched in either program).

The audio stream is a .ac3, so i don't get why womble gave me a .mpa (or is it the same?)

Same thing, different file extensions. As you now know, different programs tend to use different extensions. For instance, if I create an mpeg-2 movie using Canopus Procoder the extension will be m2p. Also, an older version of the ATI Multimedia Center capture software used to create mpeg-2 movies with an mp2 extension.

  3. Yes there are different extensions for mpeg audio and video, but ac3 is dolby audio, which is a completely different compression format from mpeg audio (mpa.)

I haven't used mpeg-vcr in a while, but I remember it has a setting where you can designate the audio for editing re-encoding as mpeg or ac3. But that shouldn't affect demuxing.

Weird. I'd stick to tmpgenc plus for your demuxing in the future.
