  1. You experts may already know this, but I post this for the benefit of other newbies like myself.

Ok, after finally realzing Ulead VideoStudio stinks for capture (lots of dropped frames) I tried DVIO and WinDV. Both capture directly to DV2 and no dropped frames! Problem is I was getting no audio capturing to DV2. DV1 worked fine. While pulling my hair out and trying captures working on this problem I found that if I captured stuff I shot directly on DV the audio is there. What I was originally tying to capture was stuff recorded off satellite and dumped to DV tape. Audio doesn't work here. Ah ha! There must be a difference.

The difference is the stuff shot on DV was recorded with 12 bit audio. The satellite recording was dumped to the DV cam with 16 bit audio. That's gotta be the difference. Fortunately I still have the original broadcast on PVR. I'm going to try to dump using 12 bit audio to make sure my theory holds.

  2. Confirmed. If I try to capture DV that has 16 bit audio it's a no-go. I have to capture as DV1 and convert to DV2.

Maybe my extra grey hair will help somebody else.
