  1. I believe this info will be best served here as all of us have to rip dvds.

Saw something pretty amazing this evening, to me at least. I helped a buddy of mine build a system and to save money, I decided to get him one of those new LiteOn combo drives. The drive I installed for him was the 48x24x48x16 or LTC48161H.

One of the things he had asked me to was to teach him to rip and burn his dvd collection for safe keeping. The system was built last week btw but finally had time this weekend to go over there. So I go over, I bring all my software tools and we start the process of me teaching him how to rip, encode and burn.

To make a long story short, I toss in a dvd into this new combo drive and it spins up, and DVD Decrypter starts pulling off data at 2x, 3x, 4x and for the first few seconds .. hovers right around there. Im thinking, damn, too bad it isnt any faster as I was hoping it might be. Then suddenly, it sky-rockets to 9x ... 10x ... 11x then 12x .... it hits 12 and nears 13x. Im sitting there thinking ... jesus h christ. we ripped the dvd in around 6+ ~ - 7 mins. ( Jackie Brown Special Edition Disc 1 )

I've ripped nearly 500+ movies on many many different kinds of media using several different drives. I have never seen this kind of speed. Anyone else out there with a story to share? from what I gathered here in the forums, most of us are stuck with and happy with, 4 - 5x ripping speeds.

Would be curious to hear of other drivers and what speeds people get when ripping. And yes, my DMA has always been up with my drives and yes, I use 80pin cables, etc etc,

I will be buying me one of these drives VERY soon and ditching my 16x litey dvd-rom and mostly likely my 52x litey.

    Cheers

  4. My LiteON LTD-163 often hits speeds of 15X on single layer DVD's. Same thing with the the LiteON 166 I have in my backup computer.

  5. Same here - I regularly post here suggesting people get Lite-on drives.

On decent quality DVD-5's, I do see 16x at the edge. Average is probably between 9x and 12x on single layers, 7x and 10x on SSDL.
