  1. Finally, I shall be getting my first DVD Writer Pioneer DVR 106D from USA when my friend visits India in 2nd Week of February. He has already purchased it for me for US $120 from zipzoomfly. I know OEM drives do not come with drivers/bundled softwares. What are the necessary drivers needed in order to run the drive ? Where do I get them ? What is firmware and do I need to download that too along with the driver ? I already having Ulead DVD Workshop, Video Studio, Nero 6 Ultra and so I won't be needing any additional video editing and burning softwares. I may worried about the drivers/firmwares etc!
    Where to search for ?

  2. If you are using Windows XP Home or Pro, the new drive should be automatically recognized. As far as firmware goes, try a few burns out first before making any changes and/or modifications. A firmware upgrade isn't a necessity or necessarily needed if your drive works properly.

*A lot of times, folks tamper with what worked properly in the first place and proceed to make it not work.

If you need any more information, the best place to go is the manufacturer's website. You can typically find all of the necessary drivers, support, etc...at such a site.

I have a Sony DRU500AX and am still using firmware 2.0c and am able to burn at 4x with no problems. I also have a Memorex Dual-X (which is really a Pioneer A06) and am not tempted to upgrade the firmware since it is burning beautifully.

I'm not trying to insult your intelligence here, but try things out first. Then, make any necessary changes or modifications if something does not work properly.

    Hope this helps you out!

  3. Yes I am using Win XP Pro and as explained by you, I would not be needing any additional drivers to detect the drive and run it. All my doubts about firmwares/drivers have been clarified. Let me try it out when my writer arrives and I will let you know in case I face any problem. Thanks for your valuable advice.

  4. Software could be the issue though, what are you planning on using to write to it with ?

I ask because some software that was supplied with an existing drive may have been locked to it, and replacing that drive (or adding to it) may render that package unusable.

This is quite rare, although a lot of drives that came bundled with Nero are locked to that manufacturer.

There are some freebie packages out there that might do the job, depending on what you're planning on doing with it, of course, but if you are planning on using your existing software you might want to download the latest updates now rather than be disapointed later.
