    It sure looks that way.

I know I could have done a search for this, but would anybody know if they sell a TBC on it's own. If so, would it be worth it and how much?

Yea I was afraid of that also. I just started getting into standalone recording. Up to now I did everything on my PC. I was looking for a faster way to get my projects completed but the more I read the more I want to spend. Good thing tax time is here.

However, no matter how you look at it whether PC or standalone, I think I need one these VCR's.
So does this mean that you were not satisfied with the captures you were getting with your PC? I would expect that a standalone with TBC would outperform a PC caoture without TBC. And it may be that your 3800 combined with the standalone TBC might be fine. It might even be great! You never know until you try. I wouldn't buy a new VCR until I knew that what I had was unacceptable.

Well actually I thought I was getting good captures with my PC. It isn't until you start reading threads like these that makes you wonder and say, "can there be something better". The reason I went to standalone is because I thought I could speed up the process. With the PC it takes a lot of time, Capture, Encode, Author & Burning. I was capturing to AVI Huffy codec just in case your wondering.

I don't have a DVD recorder with TBC. I have the Philips recorder without.
The reason I pose the question "if I had a DVD recorder with TBC would I need a VCR with TBC" was then I would just go out and purchase the DVD recorder (with TBC) and use my JVC 3800U.

So then are you not satisfied with the captures you are getting from your Philips and 3800? The quality can always be better, but is it good enough?

I have transferred over 100 2-hour SVHS tapes to DVD using a PVR-250 with various VCR and TBC combinations. Each combination has its own advantages and disadvantages, but the DVDs all look great! Are there artifacts? Sure. Could it be better? Sure. Do I Care ???

Outside of tearing, I've never seen DNR/TBC artifacts. And the DNR/TBC cannot always offset jitter, main reason I added my TBC-1000 (which elimated jitter).
lordsmurf - I had a TBC-1000 too but it often added a very slight amount of horizontal jitter. Now I have a TBC-3000 and both channels do the same thing. Do you not have this problem???

The DNR artifacts that I notice are mainly the result of reducing random noise into something more uniform. To my eye, it is similar to the artifacts introduced by the PVR-250 hardware MPEG2 encoder.

No jitter problems here, not with my TBC-1000. I have one SOB tape here I've been fighting for weeks, the DataVideo and JVC 9800 both make it worse, only the 3800 with no filtering makes it play with any decent results. Go figure.

I guess it is good but if I don't try something else, I'll never really know.
I did a search for TBC and long behold guess who's site was the first one listed? yes, lordsmurf.com.

lordsmurf, Knowing what I have, (JVC 3800U VCR) and what I may get (Panasonic DVD recorder with TBC) and that I also capture via PC.
Would you get a new VCR with TBC or would you just get the TBC?
and which TBC should I get?

    Thanks,

lordsmurf and davideck, thanks for your input. It will be a while before I purchase anything cause i'm in the process of moving. I'm sure you'll hear from me later. I hope the VCR will be available when i'm ready.

    Thanks.
