HI
Just the couple of month ago I started to be interested in capturing video. Since I have a big collection of Hi8 cassettes I wonted them on the CD. So I bought TV card Pinnacle PCTV pro. But after trying to capture my results were quite poor.
All I wanted is get picture at least as equal as VCR CASETTE.
But I was disappointed because quality was bad…the picture wasn’t clear (with artifacts) that time I was a pure beginner in that hobby. Have to admit that my system was poor too. I have head Celeron 667 with graphic card gforce 2 mx.
So I thought…system failure. Then I bought new computer athlon 2500+BaRTON, ATI Radeon 9200 graphic card, 80 gb Matrox sata H/D, 512 memory ddr400, gigabit m/b with NVIDIA nforce ultra 400 chipset.
OS XP. And…with joy I put the TV card but…results the same. On maximum resolution AVI 720x480 I am getting some greenish lines on the picture. And of course that interlacing lines.
Capturing programs I have been using were iuvcr, adobe premiere, and original programs of pinnacle. I used HUFFYUV codec.
Then I thought…mast be something wrong with TV card and I bought Leadteck Winfast2000 Delux TV card.
Guess what? Same problem. Greenish lines. But when I capture on resolution 320X 288 AVI than is OK.
Anything more I get that greenish lines. I tried everything but I can not get rid of them.
And the picture…it is never the same like when I conect my camera direct on TV or VCR.
I am desperate…please advise?
Yes…another strange thing…when I capture direct to mpeg1 or mpeg2 I get no greenish lines nor interlacing. OK. For mpeg1 is normal but mpeg2? Why? And not to say that such a picture is very poor. Like I look at the picture through the dirty glass or some kind of filter.
Thanks in advance
Alen
P.S.Sorry for long letter but I tried to explain in detail my problem

could be a number of problems.
What kind of connection are you using for Hi8 to the capture card? RCA, Svideo, coax? It could be some kind of interference, but this wouldn't explain the mpg's being fine.
Have you tried a different codec for capturing?? Try capturing as uncompressed avi just to see if it's the codec that is giving you issues..
Are the lines always in the same place? Are they only on the top or bottom half of the capture? are they equally spaced, or random? -
First of all thanks for reply
I am using RCA input. Unfortunately my camera have no SVIDEO exit. I have tried and raw AVI with same results.
Greenish lines.
If i capture at 720x480 then the lines are always in upper left part of the screen. Almost in same formation in same place.
When i capture at SVCD resolution then greenish lines are always in the middle of the screen. Again same formation.
Very strange... -
very odd.. very odd.. hmm.. have you tried a better cable? it may be interference, probably not. but who knows...
Do the lines occour when capturing from vcr as well, or only from camcorder? Can you route the camcorder footage through a vcr, then use some high quality cables from the vcr to the capture card? (The cable that comes with camcorders, the one that looks like a headphone wire on 1 end, and has 3 rca on the other just plain suck, it's nothing more than wires wrapped in a thin piece of rubber, they tend to produce very very poor video, but if you route it through the vcr first, then out from there to the capture card through some good quality cables that may help.)
Or try moving the capture card to a different pci slot, try as far away from video card and network card as possible, route the cable differently, even shield it youself by running it through some conduit. Then build a little shield aroudn the capture card with some metal, pliers and a sawzall.
I dunno what else to suggest.
Or.. just capture at 352x480 (1/2 D1 resolution) and encode that way too.. won't be as sharp, but usually looks just as good on a tv set as full D1. -
Make sure your Capture Board doesn't share its IRQ with another board which requires medium/heavy bandwidth (e.g. Soundboard).
If you have a motherboard with a VIA Chipset try this patch:

You can also try these other two patches:
