Need to help brother install new hdd in usb/firewire box using win xp without opening case.

While not a total newbe, I do not use xp and i use removeable trays for hdd.

My brother bought new pc and wants to install external hdd for vid cap using win xp. I am just "dumb' construction worker while he is retired school principle. I have "played" with hardware since '83 but am NOT a techie and know my limitations. I need some help

Without opening his box, how do I fdisk/format a external usb/firwire hdd under win xp

  2. Well XP usually picks up usb addons OK so this might work....
    Start/Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Computer Management/...
It may then either be under Removable Storage or Disk Managment...
Might even come with its own software for doing what you want.

Thanks for info, was not able to do that way. xp reconized the box ok but never "saw" the drive. Tried eyery intuitive way I could think of to do it without installing as internal to fdisk/format but failed to find solution.

Brother has new system with sealed case with void warrenty tag. Did not want to void his warrenty. Took it home and did it on my sys as internal drive then reinstalled in usb box.

Still would like to know if there is a way to do it with new drive installed in external box.
