You don't use a codec with Firewire transfer because you are transferring not capturing. Using Firewire you are simply copying a data file (that just happens to contain video) from one storage medium to another.

I'll say it again. DV transfer using Firewire is NOT CAPTURING. It is a simple file transfer. What you get on your hard drive is absolutely, bit for bit, identical to what you had on your DV tape. There is no re-encoding. The only encoding that has taken place is when the video was encoded to DV in the camcorder so it can be stored on tape.
The only time anything would bugger about with your video is if you are using something which encodes to mpeg on-the-fly as you transfer. That is a sure fire way to end up with shite quality and a file that you can't sensibly edit. Simply transfer as avi. -
