  1. Are there any authoring tools and/or DVD players that read an SVCD formatted DVD-R or DVD-RW (vs CD media). It seems that it is a logical extension to SVCD so that 5 hours or so of MPEG2 could be put on DVD-RW.

I tried using Nero to create such a media but found that it wouldn't create the SVCD directory structure on DVD media. I don't know if anything would play such a DVD if I created it.

    Thanks in advance,

  2. I'm no expert on DVD-R, but most DVD players will detect if you put in a DVD-R or a CD-R, and will treat all the media on each disk that way. So, you cannot put (S)VCD files directly on a DVD-R disk. However, you can put your mpeg-2 files on a DVD-R using a DVD authoring program. It will modify and make the files DVD compliant so that a DVD player will play the files. And, no, the mpeg-2 files do not need to be 720x480 in size. There are many sizes that are DVD compliant, all the way down to 352x480 in mpeg-2, and even 352x240 in mpeg-1, and will still be a compliant DVD file. I believe the audio always has to be 48KHz, but it can be at many different bit rates.

  3. Thanks, but if I put the mpeg2 files on the DVD, won't they get converted back to VOB files which are much larger? My goal here is to get 6 hours or so on a DVD-RW.
