I was trying to convert a (PAL) DVD to SVCD. The clip (see image) appears to be interlaced.
It would be nice if I get get the SVCD to be watchable on a computer monitor as well as on tv. Then it has to be de-interlaced, right? So I checked the Deinterlace box in ffmpegX 0.0.9a. The result was not that great. Some horizontal striping remains (see image).
Is it the quality of the filter? Am I trying something impossible? Or am I missing something? Any suggestion would be welcome.

  2. 1/ Try to activate "Single field" in the high quality properties window of Quicktime Player (and hit apple-S to save).
2/ If this is not enough, enable both "Deinterlace" and "Denoise" in the ffmpegX options.

There is no such option to activate for VOB and SVCD files.

With both options enabled, the output still looks the same.

  4. I have tried to check the deinterlace option and gotten similar (bad) results. It seems to deinterlace for the most part, but some lines remain. Weird!

  5. Try to view with VLC with deinterlacing activated. Does it deinterlace? As it could be your source being wrongly encoded.

Yes, the deinterlace options in VLC do deinterlace the movie quite well.

  7. Try to encode to DivX with deinterlace enabled, is the result good?

I used the MPEG4 [.AVI] (mencoder), which seems to be DivX 4.1.2, and encoded to 480x576 for comparison with the SVCD setting. The deinterlacing worked as advertized! Yeah! Does this mean I have to do DVD > DivX > SVCD to tackle the deinterlacing? On a sidenote, I also noticed a much brighter picture (see image) than before, although I didn't touch the luminance setting.

Yes for now - but I'll try to set a better deinterlacing for SVCD in next versions.

No, it is not DivX 4.1.2. Only DivX 4.1.2 is DivX 4.1.2, this is MPEG-4 libavc.

Ah, okay. The DivX 5.1 Pro QuickTime plugin (DivX Pro 5.component) identified the video of the avi as "DivX 4.1.2", hence my assumption.

  12. When do you plan on releasing new versions (specifically with a new de-interlace)? thanks

  13. I'm working a little more on 0.0.9b, though improvements on SVCD deinterlacing will not be included in that version.

I work as follows: "as soon as I have time, I work on new versions, and, as soon as I finish a new version, I release it", as you can see there are two indeterminate variables.
