  1. I have to capture to MPEG2 via s-video (would like AVI, but cannot - using Sony Vaio PC)
Edit (clipping mostly) using Screenblast MovieStudio 3.0
    Render to MPEG2 using Screenblast
Author and burn using Ulead Movie Factory 2

    Yes?

    Thanks,
    Allen

If you have already captured it to MPG2 then you do not want to render the file again. You can simply cut out the parts you don't want, but don't render again.

Why aren't you capturing to AVI? Is it a disk space issue?

If the only editting you are doing is clipping the odd bit out, why not use Movie Factory to do the lot?

  4. Good questions: I am capturing to MPEG2 because that is all my Sony Vaio has capabilities of capturing to.

I am not sure about the answer to the not rendering again question. Are you suggesting that after editing the MPEG2 file I can go straight into authoring?

    Really?

I am not using Ulead for the editing because I have read that their tool to create files to author are not that great.....Screenblast has a better tool. That being said, perhaps I don't have to even use Screenblast if I don't have to render again...although I am not really sure what I am talking about.

I used to capture to avi- usually took 6-7 hours to render to mpeg 2 after editing.

Now I capture to mpg2- takes '0' hours (and '0' minutes to render), and about 20 minutes to compile a DVD in TMPGEnc DVD Author.

Unless you're doing a lot of serious editing, why would you want to capture to avi when you're going to have to convert to mpeg2 anyway?

  6. Bob,

I hear ya, but how do you edit? Using TMPGEnc DVD Author? As I mentioned, for editing I am really only cutting out sections.

    Then how do you burn?

  7. It's very easy:
    1. Load your mpeg
    2. Click on edit
    3. Find the beginning of the part you want to cut out
    4. Click on Set as start frame
    5. Find the end of the part you want to cut out
    6. Click on Set as end frame
    7. Click on Cut

  8. Sorry for my ignorance, but I assume you are referring to using TMPGEnc DVD Author. yes?

So after I capture in MPEG2, I open TMPGEnc DVD Author, edit out what I don't want then add chapter points (Authoring), then render and finally burn...all with TMPGEnc DVD Author?

  9. I am not clear in what I should do.....

    I am capturing in MPEG2.
I edit using some tool (MS3, MF2, TMPGEnc DVD Author)
    I save as MPEG2???
Then author (add chapter points) using MF2 or TMPGEnc DVD Author???
    Then burn.

Again, sorry for the ignorance, and thanks for the help.

There are those (and a lot of "those") that say doing that (capturing AVI) will lead to a better end product. Editing is also far more precise (as you mentioned).

  11. The real question is: after editing in either MovieStudio or MovieFactory, can I save it as an MPEG2 file, then author in MF, then burn - essentially skipping an additional rendering step?

The way TMPGEnc DVD Author works is that it doesn't actually edit the MPEG-2 file so there's no need to write the file back to disk with the cuts, etc. It appears that all it does is looks at your original MPEG-2 file, looks at what you wanted to cut, and looks at where you want to put your chapter points and then writes to DVD ONLY the parts you want with the chapter points you want without changing your original file. Pretty smart, actually.

    So,

    1. Capture.
    2. Open in TMPGEnc DVD Author.
    3. Do cuts and select chapter points.
    4. Burn.

  13. mrmungus,

Wow, thanks very much for dumbing it down for me.
    Thats a great solution!

So I really don't even need Screenblast MS or Ulead MF?
