I would like to capture video through the s-video and composite ins of the ATI radeon 9800XL and wondered which is the best software to use.I am a beginner to video editing on a PC and did buy Pinnacle Studio 8.The problem was that S8 does not support ATI graphics cards and did not recognise the s-video and composite inputs of the ATI.I am now thinking of buying Ulead video studio 7.Footage I'm capturing is from an s-vhs vcr.
Any help would be most appreciated.

By what I can find out you better save your money. The ATI Radeon 9800 X? cards S-Video connection is a VIdeo Out connector to view your computer screen on a TV or record it onto a VCR, not to input video through for capturing. I think that's why your Pinnacle 8 program is refusing to work with it. Your manual should state this and if you don't have a manual one is available for download in PDF format at www.ati.com website under Support pages.
I hope I'm wrong, but judging by what I can find out about that card I'm not.
Just like my ATI 9800. It's an ATI All In Wonder 9800 Pro card with a TV Tuner, Composite A/V, and S-Video In and Out connectors on it. I'm not sure which ATI products offer S-Video in except the AIW cards(?). Maybe someone else knows and can help.
This is just what I can find out.
Best of luck.

As bottle-necked mentioned, your video card doesn't have video INPUT. That connector is for OUTPUT to TV or VCR.
For video INPUT, you need to have ATI All In Wonder card, which you can watch TV on your PC. -
If looking for an ATI card to capture I would go AIW, I have AIW 9000 pro. P studio 8 came with my card but says ATI version. I love Ulead VS for editing. Of PS 8, Uvs, Vdub, and MMC8.x MMC gives the best results and easiest to use especially capturing to mpeg1/2.

Hey guys thanks for the info, but from what was said I don't think I am capturing through the ATI.My PC has a TV tuner card and I think this has the s-video and composite inputs which are on the front of the tower.
Thinking back, the problem I had with S8 was that it picked up the TV tuner card but not the s-video and composite inputs.Do I have to configure the tuner card to accept video through the video inputs and if so how.I know the video inputs on the front of the PC are inputs because the PC came with some of it's own capture software and I tried capturing through that and it worked.Thing is the bundled capture software is very basic thats why I wanted to try Pinnacle or Ulead.Sorry if I led anybody down the wrong path but as I said I am a beginner to PC video editing.
Any help most appreciated(again) -
That's ok Steve3164, but please fill out your computer information in your profile. That would help this process a lot. Hardware information you do not know can be found in Windows Device Manager.
You said the capture device is working with other capture programs so, in Pinnacle did you find how to select the input connector and to select S-Video? You mentioned the 'tuner' so I assume you're seeing tuner input on Pinnacle's capture screen.....? Explain.. ok. -
When using pinnacle studio 8, when you go to the capture screen it just automatically picked up the TV tuner card.I looked in the manual and the picture in the manual had s-video and composite video buttons. This should automatically be there when you capture analogue source, but like I said the only select button was for the tuner card.I un-stalled and re-installed S8 just to see if had not installed properly the first time but still did not pick up the s and composite inputs.

Good luck. -
Thanks for your input BN.My PC has a video capture card, Medion(7134) video capture which has composite,s-video and firewire in's which are all on the front of the PC for easy access.Checked in device manager and no exclamation marks so I guess this means the capture card is working OK.
Any suggestions beyond there?.As I said I took Pinnacle studio back to the retailers so am just trying to get info before purchasing any other editing software. Thanks for your time and help. -
I'm not finding out very much about that capture card but I think it's made in Germany by http://www.medion.de/ and it has a Philips SAA 7134 MK2/MK3 chipset and uses WDM drivers. Ive read about problems with this card and WindowsXP and DirectX 9. Most of the links I could find didn't work, so we're not much better off now than we were.
You could download and try either VirtualDub or like VirtualVCR or something. At least try and see if those front panel connections will show up.
This link mentions the front panel accessory but the photos wouldn't show for me. http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2763603345
