  1. I've been using a tv card to capture an old vhs home movie that I want to burn to dvd I capture it to AVi fine then encode it with TMPEG thats fine but as soon as I author it with any author (tmpeg, ulead, spruce) the sound is always out of sync.
I've tried splitting the audio and video files but that doesnt work either

any suggestions on where I'm going wrong can it be done with the software I'm using

Are you sure the sync issue happens directly after burning?
Are you watching the DVD-r on your standalone DVD player or on the PC?
If you're watching it on yoru PC only, what software are you using to playback the DVD?
If you haven't already I suggest you watch each aspect of your process, ie. after
    1) capture (avi)
    2) encode (mpeg)
    2) burn
    Ideally with something like PowerDVD.

Have you tried playing it on a standalone?
I know it's unlikely but it might just be okay.
Other than that I'm sorry, I've been no help, I'm out
