I have a 60 gig HD and just added a second HD (Maxtor 80 gig). I took it out of another PC that I had. While in my PC now I formatted this 80 gig drive. Now the question is why does it show that I have 1.49 gig used and 73.0 free space? Shouldnt this drive be showing a 0.0 used? And why is it that a 80 gig HD shows a number of 74.49 total space on this drive? Any answers would be appreciated. TY

  2. A few things ...

    1. System Restore, if enabled for that drive, (enabled by default) will require space.

    2. Drives are not actually the size MFG's advertise as they take the liberty to redifine a MB. They use 1,000,000 Bytes in a 1MB as opposed to 1,048,576 Bytes in 1MB. In reality 80GB = is 85,899,345,920 bytes. However, the mfg is saying 80,000,000,000 bytes = 80GB when in reality it is closer to 76GB.

    3. Drives actually lose space to formatting as the marking of sectors and blocks do have an associated overhead.

  3. I read somewhere that there's a "lawsuit" for false advertisement. My 120G drive was only 114 or something like that

  4. Same here my 200gb's are really only 189gb

Couldn't have said it better .....

Correct - depends on formatting . NTFS / FAT32 will be slightly different.

As for the false advertisement, it isn't -- the general population is techno illiterate (i want to put stupid but thats not politically correct) and have no concept. These are proberly the same people who screamed their 17 inch monitor was only 14 inches wide. When infact it is measured diagonally and includes the edges covered by the case. Typical 17" monitor has 15.6" viewable. The better ones may have 16".

Then there is the CAV / CLV cdrom scam, but lets not go there.

Numbers are like politicians they can be used to baffle the unknowing with bullshit.

If the box says 200gb, then 200gb it should be.
yes, i understand the technical issues involved here but it is still false advertising

  7. I agree -- if it is a 80,000,000 Bytes call it a 76MB (+/-) HDD. Not an 80GB. A MB is a MB, and it has already been defined. Hey, I don't know how many litres are in a Gallon of milk, but that does not mean you can re-define the gallon when it comes to milk and have it stay the same for everything else !!

And while I can't recall how many inches are in a meter -- it does not mean ...

... OK -- maybe "inches" is bad example. I forgot that many men, like me, have taken the liberty of re-defining an "inch" when it comes to describing their manhood to the ladies.

Anyhow -- you get the idea!!

  10. Curryman,

OK. More info than I needed to know. You mean that you "exaggerate" the actual number of inches?

I, on the other hand, quote my size in 1/2 scale so as not to frighten the ladies. Is that not what all the guys do?

After all, unlike the hard drive MFG's, I think one should get MORE than they bargained for -- not LESS!!

leave for a day and these are the responses I get? Good work people...had me laughing my ass off!!! One thing futher about my harddrive, the 80 gig one for all you pervs....it was fat32 and I converted it to ntfs. I dont know if that means anything but thats the only thing I did to it, besides the formatting.

I bought 2 Maxtor 160's in the same week, installed in 2 W98 machines, 1 formats and is displayed at, I think, 153 gigs, the other at 163 gigs.

I think it also has something to do with the media on the disks. On some, they can go error free for another cylinder or three, on others, a cylinder or 3 less..

This is the only drive that goes over. A 120, a 100, an 80, a 60, all show up as less than advertised. So, maybe I got lucky, for a change.

(Shit, that's a hell of a way to blow all my luck!)

    Cheers,

    George

    I like thi one...

when I invest buy a stock for $100 and it goes up to $200, I made 100% profit

but when it goes down to $100 I have lost only 50% from $200

so which one is better ?

Not to mention that final effect is 0%

  17. Not that it really matters ...

But you lost 50% of the total amount, but 100% of the profit.
