    Hi there.

I'm a ULead MediaStudio Pro 7.0 user and I'm having some issues with the ability to overlay transparencies over a background. Here's my problem. I have a transparent PSD file - I overlay it over a background. As an example, it looks like this (the black is the PSD overlay):

So here's my problem. I can make adjustments to the overlay options, but if I play with the settings it either backs out from the edge of the transparency and gives a white haze (as in the example) or comes in too close and starts wiping out the black edge. This isn't such a problem with images with a defined sharp edge, but for images with feathered edges, it's almost impossible to get away from this haze effect. I wouldn't mind it so much if I could specify the colour it substitutes but it seems to be hard coded for white only. Is there any way to change this? More specifically, is there any other program that deals with overlays of transparencies with feathered edges better? Premier? Anything? When I do an overlay in Photoshop, I don't have this problem.

I'm not sure if I understand your situation totally, but I think that the feathering of the edges of your overlay might be the source of the problem. I use Sonic's ReelDVD for some of my authoring and it says that anti-aliasing features cannot be used on subpictures and overlays. Apparently the anti-aliasing adds additional pictures of different shades of color. From what I understand from the ReelDVD User Guide, subpictures/overlays can only be white, black, red, or blue. The anti-aliasing is probably the same as feathering and is adding different shades of color that won't be interpreted as part of the overlay.
Tools used: ScenalyzerLive 4.0, Adobe Premiere Pro 2.0, Adobe After Effects 7.0 Professional, Adobe Encore DVD 2.0, IFOedit 0.96, DVD-lab PRO 1.53, Adobe Audition 2.0

No, this is isn't a subpicture like you'd use in an authoring program for subtitles like ReelDVD, Maestro, or Scenarist uses. MediaStudio Pro is a video editor, like Adobe Premier. Overlays can be any colour you like in a video editing program whereas subpictures are a whole different kettle of fish, unfortunately.

  4. Why not just use CG INFINITY - which is INCLUDED as an integrated drawing and titling program within the Ulead MEDIASTUDIO PRO 7.01 suite?

Because Infinity is a vector based drawing module for creating logos, text, etc. for resizing without degredation of the image. While that's a great feature, that's not the same as what I'm trying to do. I'm trying to overlay a transparent photo (eg. a photo of a basketball on with a transparent background) against another photo (say a photo of a basketball court). A vector based drawing solution won't deal with photos.
