I'm a home video user and I am currently capturing video to eventually make a DVD, I want to store my DV data but not as full DV as it is so large, what settings are recommended format/codec etc? I only have a C.D.R at the mo and intend to just burn off the data for future editing.
To keep the data on the tapes is out of the question as I live in New Zealand and the tapes are very highly priced.
Try StreamFab Downloader and download from Netflix, Amazon, Youtube! Or Try DVDFab and copy Blu-rays! or rip iTunes movies!

I guess your other best solution is to buy a DVD-R. Just encode your AVI to MPEG-2 DVD and make DVDs immediately.
DVD-R cost around 600 US$ nowaday.

here's an idea, using TMPGEnc:
1) load SVCD template
2) load unlock template
3) modify output rez of mpeg to match DV rez (720x480?)
4) encode the mpeg
5) burn to SVCD
i believe the default video bitrate for the SVCD template is around 2500kbps. this will retain the interlacing and provide a high quality mpeg 'representation' of your original DV source but in a much smaller file.
