  1. Hi all,

I've got a JVC DV3000U. In Digital Wide mode I get a progressive scan. I've been playing around with it and it seems to give me a nicer picture (I have not coverted it to MPEG-2 for DVD to watch on my TV) and the full frame gives me a nicer still capture.

I've been scanning these boards looking for the downside to shooting in progressive mode and could not find any posts addressing it. There must be a downside or it would seem that all cameras would have this mode (it seems like less and less are using it now).

What are the disadvantages to using progressive scan? Any help would be great.

    Glenn

  2. Most TV's cannot display progressive scan video images, unless it's a multi-scan monitor. So, you have to convert the video to interlaced for display on regular TV's, or rely on having the DVD player do the conversion for you when playing the DVD. Another disadvantage with progressive scan is that the frame rate is lower, so you might see some motion artifacts (jerkyness). Progressive scan normally uses 30 frames/sec, while interlaced video use 60 fields/sec.
