  1. There was a thread here along time ago where a high school student wanted to make a Diy Standalone Divx player using a PIC.

    It very long and i just skimmed it but he seemed way over his head but now i propose doing the something similiar. I am by no means new to electronics and have already made an mp3 player with hdd connectivity usb port controlled by an avr.

    What i want to know (and this is only at the real electronics guys here) is this. Is it possible to interface a divx decoder chip to any of the "hobbyist" micro's available. I would like to use an avr but at only 20Mips they are probably too slow. Scenix run at 75Mips (about equiv of 500mhz ) are they fast enough?

    these guys claim equivalent to 2.4 GHz at 200mips

    I've searched the web but as soon as you enter divx about 10000 crappy site's come up so that was useless. Does any1 have any good links or info on interfacing to mpeg4 chips??

    Ps just to tell you all that this will be part of my new product - a car radio with built in harddrive, usb, network port, gsm/gps module, slotloading dvdrom, motorised lcd. It will essentially control the car via sms and can send exact coordinates if car is robbed or updates of car if it needs oil/petrol etc. Cool or what??
    It will take advantage of the forthcoming 3g boom to make me ultrarich!!

    Check the Sigma Designs website for info on DiVX/DVD decoder chips. You might want to think about a MCU that has a little more power, something like a Motorola 68360 MCU. With the decoder chip, you only need enough horse power to keep the data flowing, and I think some of those 68XXX might do the job. They are also designed to connect to other bits (memory, etc) without using glue logic, and have on-board DMA bus for communication with the memory. If you need more power, put the 68xxx in slave mode with a 68040 processor. You can find complete specs and dev tools at one of the Motorola websites, but the site is kind of hidden and I don't think it was linked from the main Motorola site. It's been a while since I have done any research on those MCUs, and the url escapes me at the moment. Good luck!
