TmpgENC
I am publising on an IBM r40 laptop with an external Iomega Super DVD.
TmpgEnc's products have given me good results in the conversion to MPEG-2 and Authoring.
It seems this drive has been finicky on writing -- even in decrypter when writing an ISO file --- in frustration I used DVD Author -- and it's been working so well....
THE QUESTION --
Do I throw down the $100 for TmpgEnc's products -- or can someone point me to something else which will perform equally or better -- convert to MPE2 and author...
TmpgEnc gets really hammered for being a very "simple" program -- yet jeeze... it works so well from what I have seen...
Thanks to those in the group.

I've ben using TMPG since v12 now. I'm currently using v2.520 or something, as
it keeps comming out w/ revisions - I've grown accustome to them :P
I don't think (or can't seem to remember) ever complaining about it, other
than it's speed. That, I've also grown accustome to :P
The one thing I'm mainly concirned w/ in its existance, is its performance
in quality. I can't complain. And, even if there are other encoders out
there (those that make such statements as "the other" being better) is just
plain goofy imo. I mean, just how much different can xxx be from TMPG
when talking quality, when you're for instance doing DVD encoding bitrates ?
Anyways, I hope you all get my driftIt's just plain goofy when you
compare minute differences, specially if you gotta really look for the differences.
Hardware encoders are another thing. I have a few myself, plus I've tried
a handful of various other makes in my time. I think that hardware encoders
do have their place here. They are quick and produce very little headacke.
And, if you're not looking for nonsenf (or goofy) differences, then hardware
mpeg devices can be a benefit.
My first hardware mpeg (and still have it) was the Dazzle DVC USB
(aka, DVC I) I also tried the DVC II, and was successful w/ it, but I decided
that it was not for me (at the time) and then the Hauppauge WinTV PVR USB,
which I still have to this day, but no longer use.
I may end up w/ a hardware mpeg device again, but in the end, I'll most
probably stick w/ a software encoder ( ie, TMPG :P )
Well, that was my two cents worth,

The best 3 encoders: TMPGenc Plus, CCE and Mainconcept.
TMPGenc Plus, it is an overall better encoder IMHO.
Mainconcept is very promising. It is much Faster TMPGenc but costs triple money. Also, it is a good software realtime mpeg 2 capture program (a bit worst WinDVR IMHO, but without all the issues of WinDVR... )
Not a bad choice if you ask me.
CCE is the best in quality and faster that all the other encoders, but: You can't use it straight! You have to learn things about it, including how to use avisynth. The combo of CCE with avisynth, is unbeatable.
Just for your info: This forum has plenty TMPGenc users, Doom9's forum has plenty CCE users and I don't know a good forum for the mainconcept users. -
