  1. There is a utility on ZDNet that you can use to cut ATI MMC 7 MPG files into sections and you don't get A/V Sync problems like you will with TMPGEnc. Best of all, it's free.

First, capture your video using MM7 + MM7 Registry Tool, and make sure that you have the VCD bit turned on with the registry tool.

Then take the captured .MPG file and convert it to a .DAT with VCDGear. After that use the cutter utility to cut the .DAT file into sections.

You can get the file cutter @:

With a bitrate of 2 meg on VBR mode, I have been getting about 50 min per disc of good quality video.

    Best of luck.

  2. I'm glad to hear that the infamous ATI reg tool still exists and is being used.

  4. Hey losttime,

Would you mind elaborating on your method of editing an ATI-generated MPEG-2 file? I have two MPEG-2 files which I created by capturing episodes of a TV show. I didn't know about the MM7 registry tool so the VCD bit was not turned on when I did the capture. Both of these have dropped-frames somewhere. When I demux the stream the audio is about 2 seconds longer than the video. Of course the original MPEG-2 files that the ATI card created play just fine, but I'd like to edit out the commercials.

I downloaded VCDGear like you suggested and converted the MPEG-2 files into .DAT files. (VCDGear first complained that the pack size wasn't right, so I first ran "vcdgear -mpg2mpg -fix" and then ran "vcdgear -mpg2dat" to do the conversion.)

Then I downloaded the file cutter VCD Clipper from the link you suggested. When I play the .DAT file in VCD Clipper, no video shows up in the video window. Also, there doesn't seem to be a way to specify a time in and a time out other than playing the video, which for me isn't a great solution since the shows are both an hour long.

Anyway, I was hoping you might have some more pointers on how to edit a damaged MPEG-2 file created by an ATI capture card.

    Thanks.

  5. He's talking about MPEG-1 files via MMC not MPEG-2

  6. Ooops. Oh well, any advice for the same problem with MPEG-2 files?

  7. How do you convert MPG to DAT? VCDGear only seems to allow me to convert DAT to MPG.

Also are there any problems with losing quality when you convert from MPG to DAT and back again?

  8. not sure for mpeg-2 -- if my memory is correct some people use M1 Edit ... but not 100% sure

I only use my ATI to capture to mpeg-1 or avi (via VirtualDub)
