Where did you see this firmware? The latest I can find is from 7/18/2003:

Phillips told me this firmware would enable my 8x and 32x picture search (forward only) to operate correctly instead of galloping at between 60x and 120x......... it didn't.
Incidentally, rather confusingly they're offering the same firmware in two different labelled folders one saying v1.6 and the other v_17. Wasted a lot of time downloading the second one in case it was slightly different - it wasn't.

Anyone else got any news on this problem?

  6. I got a DVDR75 a couple of weeks ago ($328 @ electronics-expo.com) and wanted to check on upgrading the firmware. I think mine has the 13F version. So I called Philips support to ask what issues the 16D version fixed and that's when the problem started.

First of all, they apparently have subbed all their phone support to India. While some of them speak pretty good English, others do not.

They seem to have standard answers to certain questions and their answer to my question about firmware was "we don't recommend updating the firmware if you are not experiencing any problems". They seemed to insinuate that units of the same manufacture date would possibly experience different problems??! Well, I'd only had my unit for a couple of days and didn't want to "experience" a problem 1 day after the 90 day labor warranty expired and that's why I asked them what problems were fixed by the 16D firmware, so I could check and see if my unit had any of the known problems.

After talking to the third support person and arguing with the first 2, (the second one hung up on me) I finally got him to read me a list of the known problems. Unfortunately, I was unable to understand most of what he said, so I still don't know what problems are fixed by the 16D.

If anyone knows or has a list of the problems fixed by various firmware upgrades, I would be very grateful if they would post them here. I would also like to know if anyone has introduced new problems into their unit by upgrading the firmware (as insinuated by support).

I have seen my unit turn off by itself a couple of times, especially when I'm recording and hit the end of the disc. Other times it turns off when I hit too many buttons on the remote too fast.

As others have stated, after checking the recording the quality of the various recording modes, I wouldn't consider using anything below the 2x mode. In the slower modes I saw a lot of pixellation, especially with very dark colors on very light backgrounds.

I made a suggestion to the support tech that Philips allow the use of the number keys to input numbers when editing a title name, since the process is so painfully slow now. He said he would pass the suggestion on, but who knows.

Over all, I am satisfied with the unit so far. I just wish Philips had a commitment to good phone support. The other comments I've read about their support seem to indicate the same problems that I've had.
