  1. Is there any software than can transcode directly from MPEG 2 Layer III to MPEG 1 Layer II? Tthe quality is not important.

I have tried Besweet/GUI without luck. It just sits there doing nothing when I start it.

I am trying to avoid the two step process of MPEG 2 Layer III to WAV to MPEG 1 Layer II.

    Are you sure it's MPEG2 Layer3, and not MPEG1 Layer3?

The MPEG2 audio spec extensions only differ from MPEG in adding more Low Bitrate/Low Samplerate options and in adding the 5.1 Multichannel and the N.B.C AAC spec.
If it's 5.1 or AAC, you're gonna have to decode to WAV 1st anyway.
If it's Low BR/SR, it's not gonna make that much quality difference, so go ahead and decode to WAV.

If, of course, it actually is MPEG1 Layer3, you might be able to get by by not doing anything.
    What is your destination format?

  3. Corn,

Winamp identifies it as MPEG 2 Layer III so I am quite sure it is NOT MPEG 1 Layer III. Plus it is 32 kbps. My desired output format is MPEG 1 Layer II (for an SVCD).

I don't care to deal with WAV, AC3, AAC or multichannel stuff. This is mono 32 kbps 22kHz! Simple stuff

Then Occam's Razor says do it the simplest most straightforward way--Decode to WAV, then encode. You can always delete the temp file afterwards.

(WinAmp seems to be correct, as 32kbps is a LowBitrate MPEG2 extension)

    P.S.
Good thing about doing it to WAV is that you could tweak with EQ or DNR, which you probably need to do if it's that low of a BR.

  5. Actually you have the principle reversed.
Entities should not be multiplied unnecessarily.
Thanks anyway. It would be easier to do it in one step rather than two!

I will keep playing with the various CLI's and see what I come up with.

Just curious,if its easier to do it in one step rather than 2 why are you going thru a few steps trying do it in one step, just convert to wave and encode.

Because the files are hours upon hours long, which equal a biga$$ wave file. And there are hundreds of them to do. Plus it is a challenge.

I assume that there is a direct route and I just have to figure it out. I decided to post here to see if anyone would have some helpful advice. I am still hopeful.
