  1. Hi!

first: I searched this site looking to see if there were post this matter but the search engine didn't find any such results (at least not with any program I know of or use). Therefore I'll try my luck here.

I simply want to know how you create a Divx-file from an AVI file captured through a Sony handycam. I am going to Australia for a year, and during my stay there I would like to place clips of my trip on my server, so I can send that to friends back home (Sweden). Therefore I need to know a way to create Divx-files from the "raw" material of an AVI-file. I of course need these files to be small compared to the amount of spaces they take directly captured from the camera while I still get as much picture quality as possible.

There are clips that plays for 1.5 hours and fits a 700 MB disc (as some may know ) with good quality, and that's kinda what I'm looking for; to minimize the space a clip takes, and I guess that that is what Divx (3ivx, xvid etc etc) are for.

So, I basically need help on what programs I should use, what way to best minimize space and maximize pic-quality and be able to do it within reasonable time on my computer.
I hope you understand what I mean

As you may understand I'm new at this, but help on the matter is greatly appreciated!

    Regards

DV camcorder files transferred using Firewire to a computer are in .avi format and run out at 13Gb per hour. So what you need to be able to do is convert these .avi files to Divx. Click on convert on the left and search for tools to do avi to Divx, you'll be surprised at how many you find.

  3. Virtualdub can do what you want, there are 2 types of DV avi file type1 and type2, virtualdub will only open 1 of these, I think it is type 2 (I have got a 50% chance of that being right )

If your DV avi file is the wrong type you can get software to change it in the tools section.
