  1. I'm pretty much setup hardware and software wise. Just waiting for my JVC HRS-9800 (should be here today). So is this pretty much how it goes from here.

    1. Capture VHS to AVI (or MJPEG)
    2. Encode to MPEG-2
    3. Author
    4. Burn
    5. Check it out on the TV and see what I want to change
    6. Go back to step 1 and make this pass with some changes

OR ... if I capture right to MPEG-2

When you guys are burning and checking out the result do you use
DVD-RW so you can re-write without having to use another DVD
or is it important that you use the mdiea that your output will finally be on.

    Thanks again .... MACKY

That is an -excellent- habit to get into. If you run into a technique that doesn't work for you, you can blow a lot of money on coasters in a very short time. RW lets you tweak and fiddle without burning up the rent money every time you try a new idea. Also, if you haven't already, check out Lord Smurf's page. He's done an astonishing amount of work on VHS capture. Definitely worth a read.

No, use dvd-rw's, they're fine for testing.
I don't have that facility, my burner is a DVD-R/Ram but I'm at a stage where where final ouput is my final output.
Your biggest challenge is determining the perfect settings in
    a) capture and
    b) encoding
If you use TMPGEnc Plus for your avi to mpeg2 stage there's a great guide on this site, I'll dig out the link if you're interested.
