I've done some research on this and there seems to be proponents of both sides. What exactly are the advantages and disadvantages of a standalone DVD recorder vs a PC with a cap card set up and software conversion program? What are your opinions?

Advantage PC: much more options for editing, authoring and burning your DVDs
Disadvantage PC: you need more knowledge how to do this -
Advantage of a DVD recorder, just about anyone can use it, and it records to DVD format in real time.
Advantage of PC capture and burn, as stated by lapaz, much more versatile. -
When I'm backing up my VHS tapes I prefer to use my computer with a ATI AIW Card to capture. This way the video is already on the computer so I can author in TMPGEnc DVD Author. If the tapes are to old I use my Sansui DVD Recorder to avoid dropped frames.

The advantages and disadvantages are subjective and hinge entirely upon the amount of effort the user is willing to put forth.

Another advantage of standalone:
You don't need to stay in front of pc during capture. I think standalone is more trusted to schedule.
