I've recently tried to watch some movies that I burned, and the screen never stayed still. It always kept going down. This is because I encoded it in the wrong field, right? I always encoded in Field A, and the movies always look fine on the computer, but not when I burn it. Do you always choose to do the bottom field first when converting from .avi to .mpg in TMPGEnc? If so, why? Otherwise, do you have to find out what field do to first? How can I do that? Thanks!

Depends on your source. The majority of the files I've converted have been progressive but who knows what the next file will be.
Here are two articles that really helped my understanding on this subject.

Great site that outlines interlacing/de-interlacing techniques as well as methods for determining field order..... down near the bottom of the page.
And another,
