  1. When I convert avi. to VCD and SVCD, i get som jerky movements in playback. I'll outline the process I use. Feedback/corrections would greatly be welcomed:

    check avi file using virtualDub-mp3
    extract sound using VirtualDub

When it comes to using TMPGEnc (with wizard)

I first select the appropriate (S)VCD type based on fps
Get the avi. and wav file from my computer

When it says Expert seting for source I get confused:
I'm using non-interlaced as most avi are from DVD sources
    Field order goes unchanged
Aspect Ratio: I leaving it at 1:1 (VGA) but I feel this might be wrong. My avi files are either 29.97 or 23.976 from DVD sources. What should I choice here?

    MGEG Setting:

    Video:

Aspect Ratio: I'm using 1:1 VGA here as well
Frame Rates: pre-set from what I selected before
Rate Contol Mode: I'm using 2-Pass variable bitrate now for SVCD and Constant bilrate for VCD
Encode mode: not using 3:2 pulldown when playback to covert 24fps to 30 fps. Should I?
Motion search precision: I'm using high quality

    Under Advance:

I'm using non-interlaced. for DVD ripped avi files is this correct?
Source aspect ratio: using 1:1 VGA. ???
video arrange method: full screen (keeo aspect ratio) - I like widescreen.

I'm not using any filters at this point, but should i be using 3:2 pulldown for 23 fps avi files and how is this different than the one in the video tap under encoding noted above.

Well that's pretty much it. Any help would be welcomed. The most confusing thing for me now is picking the right souce aspect ratio as most of the files I'm converting are download.[/b]

Try encoding short samples using different field orders.

  3. It odd though because I don't see the problem constantly, the jerky, fast motion occurs every once in a while. Does anyone know if I'm using the right source ratio settings....should I be using 16:9 525 line (NTSC) or maybe 4:3 NTSC (I have no idea if avi are anamorphic...but all are in wdescreen formats) as 1:1 VGA is usually for Computer Animation. But if avi files are dvix files, which they usually are, aren't they encoded/created initially to play on computers.....confused, confused!

Are you experiencing playback issues on the PC or your DVD player?

  5. DVD player playback, although watching things on my computer isn't the best. And maybe I should say jerky, it just seems like the motion of the video image speeds up sometimes during playback where burnt on cd-r's after encoding. Images and audio are never out of sync though. Normal?

Nope, not normal. Since you have no intention of changing the field order, you may also want to try a diiferent media brand. But you may be spinning your wheels if the problem is indded caused by incorrect field order.

Use 3:2 pulldown encoding at 23.976 on 23.976 frame rates cause if you encode at 29.97 it will be jerky.

  8. To respond to a few posts above, it's not that I have no intention of changing my field order..it's just that if you keep source aspect ratio at 1:1 VGA or if I keep the source non-interlaced (one of them, I'm not sure), Field order is blacked out so you can't change it. I'm still not sure if these source settings are correct.

I'll try using 3:2 pulldown to see if that changes anything as most of my avi. files are 23 fps. and I do understand Television with NSTC are 29 fps. Thanks for all the help so far.

  9. The more I read, the more confused I get. Okay, are DVD source AVI files interlaced or non-interlaced? I thought they were non-interlaced, but am i wrong?

    hi Darryl.
seems like i had the same problem.

my video source was with 23.976 fps (Ntsc film). i tryed to make a vcd and it was jerky.it's most probably in your Dvd player. for example i have Lg dk377 and it doesnt support 23.976 (as it turned out!). so i reconvert my source to 25 fps (in Vdub) and my video goes smothly now.
