Simple question really but i'm confussed ;(
Can you play a Backed up DVD (Normal Film eg: Platoon) on a PS2 stright out of the box ie NO MODS/ CHIPS or SWAPS just a Virgin PS2 ??
The film has been backed up onto a Ritek -R 4x DVD (Orange label) and plays ok in Other Players.
My PS2 version according to the info is a SCH00003

But i have been told: it should, they do, mine does yes they work.

According to the above link, which I found in the DVD Players list to the left, a Sony Playstation 2 should play backup DVD movies burned on DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW ... Your movie backed up to a Ritek - R SHOULD play in the PS2 given everything else is o.k. (i.e., the burn went o.k., the method to backup the movie was correct, ect.) -
RKR is right however the ps2 is very picky about the type of media used.

The playability on a PS2 depends on the laser inside and type of media used.
I have a first gen PS2(north american and Japanese) and so far I have been successfully able to play movies from the following media:
Fuji
TDK
Maxell
