  1. Very RAW person here and I would like in very, very basic terms (so I understand) some help.
I am that raw, I wouldn't even know where to look on the site. I have browsed a bit but I don't see anything that helps me, not in simple terms anyway lol.

I want to do this - turn my VHS videos into DVD's or put them on CD. I know you are all going "Man is she dumb" well, maybe I am but I have NO idea where to start.

This is what I have. I have a cd, dvd burner, a VHS player. My pute is (from what I do know) runs on XP, has 512 whatever that is, pentium, it has lots of space and runs fast I know that much.
See.....I know very little about these matters but I am a very quick learner. I have yahoo or msn if anyone would like to cantact me or explain via messenger.
ANY help here would be much appreciated. Will love you forever

You need some sort of capture device for your computer in order to take the analog signal from your VCR and put it onto your hard drive. Then you edit, convert, author and burn to disk. All of the bolded words are seperate sections over there <-<-<-. Good capture devices are not cheap and it is not an easy process to learn. If you want to put in the time then it is possible and there are people here who can help with every step.

I have some home footage and instead of that long and difficult route I will be getting a stand alone DVD recorder. Plug in your vcr, press play and record and voila...very decent quality home video. If you want you can take the dvd footage, transfer it back to your computer, edit it as you like, and then author and burn to DVD as you already have a DVD burner on your system. Hope that helps a bit.

  4. You seem to have most of the required components, but as FMCTM1SW stated, you do to have a means of capturing video or connecting your VCR to your computer. Some video cards (where your computer monitor hooks up to your computer) have the ablility to capture video via connectors designed for hooking up a VCR or other device. Some have the ability to output your computer display to a TV. The one's that have both are often referred to as VIVO (Video In / Video Out) capable.

At the very least your video graphics card must have VIDEO-IN capabilities. If not -- you can purchase add-ons that would permit the Video In function should your system not have that. Some are in the form of addtional cards that go inside your computer (TV Tuner card, etc.), while others are external and hook up via the USB connector (made by Pinnacle or Dazzle, etc.)

Perhaps if you could tell us more about the video capabilities of your system, we could determine if an addtional component purchase is required -- that would be a good start.

Also -- if you could tell us about what it is you hope to be transferring from video to DVD or CD. The reason is then we can determine what issues there may be with COPY PROTECTION, such as MACROVISION.

Once we figure these things out we can start looking at what what you might need in the way of hardware and software.

  5. Gee thanks for the hepl guys. I will look at a few things on the pute re video in out etc as mentioned and a couple of other things. Let me check the stuff an here and get back to you

I only want to convert my home movies. I have a freiends wedding I recorded and some family stuff, nothing illegal.

Perhaps if you could tell us more about the video capabilities of your system, we could determine if an addtional component purchase is required -- that would be a good start.
Let me check all that oit.....thanks again guys.

  7. You found a capture kit, so that is a good start! Chances are it comes with the software you will need to do what you've described. Pinnacle Studio is very good software providing an easy interface and good results.

Also -- does your computer support USB 2.0? You may have to look at a manual or spec sheet (if it is a "name brand", i.e. Dell, Compaq/HP, etc) or specs on the motherboard if it was custom built by an individual or small shop. It sounds like you have a relatively new PC since it has a DVD burner. If it is relatively new, it will have USB 2.0. You stated a Pentium processor -- if it is a Pentium 4 processor, then you should have USB 2.0 and you should be fine.

FYI -- If your computer does not have USB 2.0 (the v2.0 is important), and you intend on getting a USB solution, then you will need to either buy a seperate USB 2.0 adapter to install in your PC, or buy a kit that includes one. USB1.0 or 1.1 is simply not fast enough to capture video at an ideal screen size.

  10. Yep, and how long does a woman have to wait for help when her car breaks down on the side of the road? I actually saw a TV program on this a while back. Poor dudes broke down and noone helps, but women had all kinds of help. Hilarious....

For all you know I could very well be a 45 year old truck driver.

FYI....I don't require help when I break down on the side of the road. Unless it's a qualified mechanic that stops to help, they wouldn't know more about fixing my vehicles than I do

Okay, someone mark the date and time. We now officially have the first recorded instance of a woman impersonating a man on the net.

  15. Incredible.

I have been reading this site for a little while now and I would like to know where are the hardened members have gone with this particular message. I could almost guarantee the response would normally have been something along the lines of :

"The answer is on the site, keep reading ... " or "Why do people always do this, post questions that have already been answered elsewhere" etc...

However a lovely lady turns up and "bang" suddenly people are out there actually looking up stuff on the internet for her.

You know what, I do believe that us men are as shallow, single-minded and transparent as women accuse us of being, and further more I have to say I just love that!!! What's wrong with a little bit of one dimensioned thinking!!

  18. Who said the days of Chivalry are gone? Some still hold doors open for ladies and stand-up when a lady enters a room.

Ladies in these types of forums (technical) are very rare. Having them grace us with their presence in these forums filled with testosterone, noxious emmissions, beer, and cigars, is a welcome change.

Ladies are welcome, and we guys will be on our best manners. We will put away the daggers, and watch our language.

Guys, on the other hand -- well, they are on their own...

...and sometimes they better have a very thick skin!!

  19. Well, I'm gonna buck the trend here.

Since you know a little about cars, let's try this. If I told you I wanted to put a blower on my Pinto, you'd have a lot of things to tell me but wouldn't know quite where to begin, right?

I would strongly recommend against the USB devices, though they are simple and easy. Unfortunately in this hobby, "easy" and "hi-quality" seldom go together.

There is just so much to learn, I realize the guides are almost incomprehensible at first. As you continue reading, various terms will begin to make sense and the whole thing starts to come together. I would hate to see you lay out bucks for a device which just won't give satisfactory results.

If your computer is reasonably modern, IMO one of the ATI AIW cards would be a better investment.
