I got Dish Network with one of those PVR units. I like to transfer some of my favorite shows to my computer for burning onto DVD or just keeping on the hard disk as video files.
I assume that the PVR encodes the digital signal into an MPEG2 file for storage. When I open a new project (using Vegas 4) I set it up as an AVI for DVD. Is this hurting the quality of the video? Should I just bring it into an MPEG2 project?

I have this exact setup and have not found a way to 'download' the stored file from the PVR to my PC. I just have to capture the video using the analog S-video out. This of course means that a compressed mpeg file is converted to analog, then my capture card converts it back to digital.
Is there loss? You bet, but the average person wouldn't be able to tell. -
That makes sense. I was thinking that since it goes from one digital source to the other that it was more of a transfer than a capture.
I guess it would convert it to analog to go over the S video though. So it doesn't matter how I capture it there will be loss involved when the signal is converted from MPEG2 to analog.
Thanks for the help.
