Without getting too long winded...
I have a PAL VHS tape but no PAL deck. Want to digitize footage into machine, edit in Final Cut, dump out as NTSC using either SVCD or DVD. Is this possible by routing an NTSC SVHS deck through an ADVC 100 and firewire or through a DV deck? I know FCP supports PAL but can it take a PAL signal played through a NTSC deck and convert that somehow? ANY suggestions are much appreciated.

Tracking speeds are different (PAL tapes move slower through the machine). Some NTSC VCRs with very wide tracking speed adjustments are able to play PAL tapes in B&W. If your VCR can do that there is some hope. If not, then the video output is just garbage, nothing a system convertor could use.

If it's only one tape just get it converted at a local video store (should be around $10).

The trouble is, A) I don't want to lose a generation and B) I don't want to spend the money AND lose a gen if I don't have to. Looks like I'll have to take it as a loss though...
