  1. All this talk about interlacing and interpolation got me curious, so I did an experiment. I took a 320x240 capture and set TMPGenc to encode n mpg2 at 480x480. The result was an incredible increase in resolution an detail. It's amazing that the source that was so low-res could produce such good hi-res results.

  2. Interesting, can you tell us whether you play the resulting video file using PC or DVD player ?

  4. 1. I captured the video at 320x240. It is a 30 min program that I edited the commercials out of so it is about 22 mins. It was compressed using huffyuv so it is 3-4 gigs.

    2. I loaded the avi into TMPGenc, and went to video settings and made the following settings:

    stream: MPEG-2 Video
    size: 480x480
    Aspect: 4:3 display
    Frame rate 29.97 fps
    Rate control: 2pass VBR

    3. Then click on Advanced tab and select Deinterlace. Make the following setting:

    Method: Double (adaptation)

I also added a sharpen edge filter, but that was for minimal enhancement for my particular video. Do this as you see fit.

After you do the above, you can check the Preview before going through an entire encode. Keep in mind that the picture will be stretched vertically on your PC, but it will be okay on your TV.

I am still amazed at the quality that is possible from a 320x240 capture. Absolutely amazed.

  5. This is basically what the DVD player does to play a VCD, or you play a VCD in full screen on your PC...

  6. I beg to differ. These are not just bigger pixels. This is not even a "smart resize". It is literally new detail, a smoother picture. Diagonals that had that "stair step" aliasing, are now smooth. One limitation seems to be the more horizontal lines and details. Even still, it does an amazing job. I'll post some samples on my web page soon.
