    Hi all

New to all this so I thought I would ask a question. How long should it take to back up a DVD movie?

FYI I am using Nero 6.3.0.0, my O/S is WIN XP PRO.

Initially when I got the writer I was using USB 1.1 and burns were taking 120 - 150 minutes, so I upgraded to USB 2 and now 1 full length film takes between 45 and 65 minutes.

My writer (Freecom Classic external DVD+/-R aka NEC 1300A?) claims to write at upto 4x and the best times I have achieved have been with a 4x disc.

    Does this seem about right?

    Cheers
    James

  2. 2x takes 28-30 min
    2.4x takes 22-24 min
    4x takes 14-15 min

That is of course assuming a full disc.

USB does not have the transfer rate of EIDE, so that would perhaps explain your slower burn speeds.

I'm using Nero Vision Express 2 and burn a full DVD-video on 4-5 hours!

The actual burning is done in 10-15 minutes - it's the transcoding that takes so much time....

Am I doing something wrong or is this normal?

    Thanks for all your replies!

I just tested my USB2 connection, and thats working fine but a full disc is still taking between 45 & 60 mins!

I guess there is over 160 mins of material that I am backing up, so does that mean I am working at about 2.4 x ?

Also, looking at the media I am using they don't say that they burn at 4x (in fact one says it's only 1x but it still takes about an hour!). Surely these figures make a difference, but I am not sure what that difference means!

Anyway, thanks again - any further guidance would be appreciated!

  7. James youre NOT burning at 2.4x

    Burning a full DVD
    1x takes about an hour
    2x takes 28-30 min
    2.4x takes 22-24 min
    4x takes 14-15 min

    Thanks Tompika

I guess I need to buy some 4x media and see if that makes a difference!

Can I ask a thick question though, if a film is over 2 hours, and burning it takes an hour, why wouldn't that be a 2x burn? Does the 1 x refer to something other than duration?

    Cheers!

    No.

Ok I think I get ya!

1x (or whatever) refers to data transfer rates as opposed to "real time".

    Cheers....
