Lots of guides to the left. If you are looking to play your DVD on a settop player, you will have to encode it the MPG. TMPGEnc is one program that will do that and as Jimmalenko said, TMPGEnc Author will put it into DVD format and add chapters if you want.

    I hope it isn't copyrighted
If its a dvd rip then chances are the quality is not going to be that good when converted to fulls creen at DVD bitrates. I would use TMPGEnc Free Version to convert it to VCD or SVCD standard. You will see what I mean if you continue on and burn to DVDR.
    If in doubt, Google it.

Yes, SVCD is mpeg too, and no, you can't create a SVCD on DVD media. Other mpeg encoders are MainConcept and CCE to mention a couple. When TMPGEnc and your system is set up correctly, TMPGEnc has no problems with XviDs or most other AVIs. For really stubborn files, you can rely on opening them in VirtualDub and frame serve to TMPGEnc.
Keep reading the guides/articles found under Convert left, the AVI to DVD/SVCD section, and try some methods described there.

Almost all AVIs have audio in compressed format. It may be mp3 or AC3, but other encodings can be found too.
If AC3, TMPGEnc can't handle it directly, so you have to extract the AC3 track with VirtualDub and convert to WAV. Or you can load the AVI in GoldWave, and save audio as WAV if your system has the right codec installed.
As for guides, make a search on AVI to DVD under Convert, and read, read, read. None is going to hold your hand from start to finish!

    Hey turb0,

Don't give up so easy - you'll soon discover that this video stuff is a black art that takes time to master... Anyway, see the top of this link:

    its a dvd-rip i downloaded
I hope it's not a copyrighted dvd that's been ripped that you've downloaded as this would be in violation of the site's rules, not to mention being illegal. It's not tolerated here and you wouldn't get any help.

The site administrator doesn't want this site closed down, nor do the many many people who have benefited from it. Violations are regularly reported by general users.

So, you need to install the XviD codec. I'd recommend ffdshow too, as many experience garbled (green screen) output from XviD.
A last resort (IMHO) is to use the fourcc changer. Change all occurances of XviD to DivX in the AVI.
