I use the Hauppauge WINTV PVR USB 2.0. Works very well.
Does hardware mpeg encoding. -
grossjamesh: Hauppauge WINTV PVR USB 2.0 isn't suppose to be any good. it got a bad review. rkm69: were did you see the firewire cards?

go to the left and look under capture cards. you can specify if you want usb2.0 or firewire. the canopus advc-100 seems to be a very popular device.

I got a laptop and I may find something on this regard. -
Not a card, but external usb capture.
ADS usb InstantDvd-2

Much better than user ratings imply. Original firmware and bundled software had problems and ADS took some time to provide updates, creating a lot of negitive early users. I only rated it a 6/7 for this reason. Althrough tech support is improving -by forum posts- it is far from good. Offset a great deal by a good forum.
My only disappointment now is that it does not support pvr. Chip set is capable of it, just not utilized. -
I can only relate my experience with the WINTV PVR USB 2.0
Its on its third computer and hasn't ever given me any problems.
Hauppauge's tech support is greatly improved. WinTV200 SW is very good.
If you need the ability to move a capture device from computer to computer, make mpeg files, watch tv, listen to FM, take snap shots of the video then this is the device for you.
I dont understand the negative comments about the card. Ive never had any problems.
But again that's way there's horse races.
