Porn producer's complaint: Kazaa won't block downloads

WASHINGTON — An adult-video company has complained to Congress that the owners of the Kazaa Internet file-trading service have not blocked users of the network from downloading its films, even though they have the technology to do so.
Pornography producer Titan Media said Kazaa's owner, Sharman Networks, can closely monitor activity on the network through "spyware" installed on users' computers and could use that capability to block its users from downloading copyrighted files.
But Titan said in a letter to Congress that Sharman has not cooperated with a request to stop unauthorized copying of Titan's adult videos over its network.
Titan's letter, released late Monday, is the latest blow to Sharman as it battles charges that it facilitates widespread copyright abuse and the spread of child pornography over its Kazaa network. Millions use Kazaa to copy music, movies and other computer files from each others' hard drives, without paying royalties for copyrighted material.
Like other movie studios and record companies, Titan has sought to stop unauthorized copying of its products by Kazaa and other "peer to peer" networks.
Sharman has long maintained that it cannot control what users share over Kazaa, though it told a Senate committee last fall it would try to improve its content filters to help users avoid offensive material.
Titan said it had asked Sharman to block 1,400 of its movies last month but had received no response.
"Sharman Networks does not want to interrupt the flow of adult materials through its network because its existence is a primary factor in the growth and profitability of (the) company," Titan vice president Keith Ruoff wrote the Senate Judiciary Committee.
Pornography accounts for more than 40% of the material on Kazaa, he said.
A Kazaa spokesman declined comment as he had not seen the letter.
Pioneer peer-to-peer service Napster tried to develop a method to block copyrighted files after it was shut down in 2001, but ultimately abandoned the effort. Napster now operates as a for-pay service supported by the recording industry.

actually I started using Edonkey ...
Kazaa is installed and works fine but I've got 13 files downloading at this moment ... on Edonkey.
Kazza ... eeehhhh ... I might get 3 or 4 at one time ... but not very often.
Edonkey ... is a different story.
I'm constantly running out of room and having to burn DVDs to remove the files from my hd ... to make room for more stuff.

When I say ... burning DVDs ... I mean using blank DVDs to archive my data files. Zip files ... rar files ... bin files ... pictures. Whatever is taking up room on my harddrive ... I remove it by burning the stuff to blank DVDs ... blank CDRs dont hold as much as a blank DVD disk.
I use Nero Express or Roxio EZCD to burn these files to DVDs.

Kazaa and Spyware. I use Kazaa 2.0 with Kazaa Tap running in the background ... gets rid of all those extra buttons ... also allows more choices in file specifications. -

The Edonkey network is great. Not so fast, but it does allow you to get tons of files at once. I am also running out of room.
But only 100% Public Domain files.

There's actually someone out there still using KaZaA? You've got to be kidding! :P
Dumped it a while ago for eMule+ , it's so much better...downloads complete and less chance of viruses. I don't even have KaZaA on my PC anymore, and hopefully I'll never see it again.
KaZaA is like AOL, training wheels for P2P. If anyone is still using it, might be a good time to check out something better. And almost anything is better.Ethernet (n): something used to catch the etherbunny -

Kazaa was never very fast ... but awhile back ... I was hooked up to someone who was shooting the files to me. I keep reinstalling Kazza ... as long as I keep the original "dat" files ... I can reinstall windows ... and then reinstall Kazaa ... and Kazza will be back up and running ... I've got files from over a year ago ... not finished. At least with Edonkey ... files with the progress color ... red ... tell me ... the file I'm trying to get is not complete. Last week as I was downloading a file ... the red was changeing more and more to blue. Must have been "something" only recently added to someone's stash. I did get this 600 meg file ... complete.
Edonkey ... Spyware ... none ... I guess.
Beware of Bit Torrent ... it by itself is okay ... but a few weeks ago ... I downloaded this search program for finding bit torrents ... I ended up with a search bar attached to Internet Explorer ... oh man was I mad ... I got rid of it ... took a few days before finding out how to properly remove it.
I now have all kinds of Spyware detection programs running to stay protected.
Bit Torrent wize ... I hope this is okay to mention ... I use it for obtaining tv shows I missed or when my daughter missed the Thanksgiving "Friends" episode when they met for dinner and spaced out what time to be there on time. And they were all out in the hallway talking ... had I not found it on Bittorent ... I would never have gotten to see it.
.... These are normal shows broadcast over free air waves ... picked up on a antenna sitting on top of our roofs ... are we to be penalized for not having our VCRs ready at the moment the show came on.
Plus some areas broadcast in High Definition ... and the shows are much better in quality ... I live in a agriculture area ... with Cotton and Grapes being our most popular crops ... everything is broadcast out of Fresno.
About the only thing most of you know about Fresno is ... how high the homicide rate is there ... seems like that is all we hear about on the 11 PM news ... geez.
Just two days ago ... some person leaves their car running ... a woman steals their car ... a SUV ... takes it out on the street. She gets hit headon ... driver of other car ... minor injurys ... but the female car thief ... she died. DUMB !!

A Farmersville woman in a stolen car died early Wednesday in a head-on crash north of Tulare, possibly as she tried to avoid police.
The 37-year-old woman, whose name was not released because her family had not been notified, was driving north near Tagus on Road 192 at Avenue 264 at high speed, said California Highway Patrol officer Mark Walker. As she drove the 1999 Mitsubishi Mirage around a sweeping curve approaching Highway 99, she drifted into the oncoming lane and crashed head-on into a GMC Yukon driven by Matthew Swarthout, 22, of Tulare.
The accident happened about 5:40 a.m.
Both the car and the sport-utility vehicle received major damage, Walker said. The Farmersville woman, who was not wearing a seat belt, was declared dead at the scene. Swarthout’s injuries were described as minor to moderate; he was taken to Tulare District Hospital, where he was treated and released.
The chain of events started with a report of a car stolen at about 5:30 a.m. from a home in the 800 block of North H Street in Tulare.
Tulare police Lt. Tom Muñoz said the car had been left running in a fenced yard to warm up. When the owner returned, the car was missing and police were called. Within minutes, Tulare police dispatchers broadcast a description of the stolen car.
A few minutes later, a Tulare police officer saw the car driving near West Street and Prosperity Avenue.
“The officer wasn’t even sure it was the vehicle,” Muñoz said. “It fit the general description, so he was trying to get to a point where he could confirm the vehicle.”
Walker said the officer made a U-turn to check the vehicle’s license plate, but by the time he got turned around, the car had taken off heading north on West Street, which becomes Road 92 outside the city.
“It wasn’t a chase,” Walker said. “[The officer] never even got close, never even turned on his lights.” The officer continued driving north and eventually came upon the crash.

I have been using KAZAA LITE since Napster died and WinMX became useless. I have never had a problem with slow downloads, but have had a lot of fake files recently. A mate has suggested Bit Torrent as at least the files are what they're supposed to be.

EDonkey requires you get onto a good server, which never happens for me.
Kazaa works if you have a hacked client, but the standard client is a brutal thing that crashes 98 machines (sucks to have that limited IP stack).
Porn is always abused. People do it because they think no one will complain!
Well, I'm complaining!!!! I downloaded all the porn on kazaa last year, and nothing new is on there!!!! The funny thing is I'm not joking. There's not more than 10 GB or porn on kazaa and it's all old stuff :P
It's sadly true.....
Anyway, kazaa is generally useless. The total inconsistancy of what's available is horrible. It's basically music only swapping, full of spyware, and puts an INCREDIBLE strain on cable/DSL networks.

Not exactly. You can be on any server, because eMule uses a UDP search across all servers to find sources, so it's not that important which server you are on. I don't notice any difference in speed no matter which server I'm on. You're not downloading from the server, you're downloading directly from other clients. You can log onto any server you want anyway (if it's not full) by just double clicking on it in the server window. Only if you are searching manually for a file to download from the search window of eMule, then it would make a difference. However, most people use a website search for files on sharereactor.com or filedonkey.com to locate what they are looking for. I never use the eMule direct search function for that reason. I have download speeds in the range of 100KB/s often, and it averages 40KB/s. Yes, it takes time to start, there isn't the "instant gratification" of Kazaa, it sometimes doesn't download immediately. But once it gets rolling, it picks up speed as you gain credits on clients you upload your completed parts to. If there are a lot of sources for a file (100+) then you could get a 700MB ISO in less than 24 hrs.
Of course, you have to set up your firewall and port forward (if you're using a router) to your client, but this is easy. I like the fact that files will complete even if it takes a little longer than Kazaa, and if you get a corrupted file it uses ICH (intelligent corruption handling) to re-download just the corrupted part so you get a file that works instead of crap like you wind up with off Kazaa. Kazaa is fine for smaller files like MP3's, but if you want ISO's and other large files, you need something like eMule to be sure that you will get something that actually works, instead of corruption or viruses.

Wasn't aware Edonkey was pan server. The last time I used it it was 100% napster clone, which has server based searching. Most servers had a 5000 or 10,000 user limit. You search, get no hits, change servers and search again. There was no handing traffic off to other servers. There is no central management of servers. In fact, most of the 'good' servers are restricted in the anonymous access.

I use Direct Connect (DC++) for P2P. Choose a hub with content you are interested in and connect. You can chat public or private with other users and search for files. Speed depends on the connection type and varies from less than 1KB/s to the max d/l speed you can handle. Most hubs require a minmum share size, typically 5GB.
Second preference is Bit Torrent, then eMule, which has an automatic high user profile to maximise download priority, and last of all Kazaa Lite++ -

Don't know about eDonkey, I don't think many are using it (client) anymore (eMule took it over, though the network is still the eDonkey network). Maybe since you last used it, there have been improvements in the client program. They are constantly updated and improved.Originally Posted by Gazorgan
No matter which server you are on, when it does the UDP search across servers, you will find the sources if they're out there, automatically. It uses TCP for the file transfer on port 4662 (default, can be changed if you wish) and the UDP on 4672 (also changeable). In the server window, you can choose which server to log onto, if you wish, or let eMule decide which one to use, based on autopriority settings. As long as you have your ports configured properly, you'll get a high ID and good file transfer speeds.
You don't search for files to begin downloads from on the search window of eMule, normally - though you can if you want to. As I said, if you do this, you are limited to the server you're on for results. However, if you go to filedonkey or jigle, for example, and find the file and SHA to use, you click on it and it loads into eMule and when the UDP search starts, if the file is available it will begin downloading.
There are literally dozens of websites with links for eMule, among the largest being www.sharereactor.com and www.shareprovider.com (take a look at them if you want to see what is available). Maybe you were only searching using the server-based search and that's why you didn't find much, no wonder you were disappointed with it!
There are limits to max. users per server, as you said, but if you get on a good one like .s.e.d.g. for example, you can stay connected for weeks at a time, even if it reaches max users, you are already on and if someone else tries to log in it won't let them, but you stay on it. But really doesn't matter, like I said, it searches across all available servers every 15 min. or so for file sources for your queue.
Since I started with eMule back in late August, I've downloaded over 200GB of data without any problem. You might want to take another look at it, like you said.

What I love about eDonkey is the HUGE amount of hashes, or verified downloads that are available. I know Kazaa has the same, but there are hardly any people online with that file. eDonkey there is ALWAYS someone.

Anyone running Windows 98, you got about 30 days to upgrade before you are toast. No more M$ security updates, so the next round of worms is going to trash the internet (which has 30%+ 98 users on it).
I suppose i can look at emule. The problem is I don't look for specific things. More like a fishing expidition. My latest chumming has been for fan-spoofs (which seem to all be in Russian of late).

At least 95% of the time, if you are going to search for something on Filedonkey.com, you can enter in the search term the letters "rus" (no quotes) for anything in Russian (along with the file name of what you're looking for). There are tons of Russian parodies, they even spoof themselves a lot. I liked the "Kukly" (roughly translates to "dolls") series from a while back, that spoofed Yeltsin, Putin and other world leaders (as puppets/dolls talking to each other). I remember there used to be a show just like it here, forget the name right now. Wicked parody, though. Putin was pissed about it and wanted the Putin doll removed from the show.
I just watched a spoof of their New Years' concert where the group parodies a lot of Russian and American music acts (ABBA, Queen and others). Pretty funny. Helps to have someone to translate for you, though.
There are tons of Russian eMule websites, if you need some, let me know. It seems more stuff in Russian is available on eMule than any other P2P - Russians seem to like it a lot. We constantly have 75 - 100 downloading at once, with new stuff being completed every day.
BTW, Shareaza will connect to the eDonkey network, but I think it has limited slots on there. I don't often see anyone on Shareaza in my upload queue. It's about 70% eMule, 20% eMule Plus, and 5% others. Overnet also connects to it, but I haven't seen anyone at all in my queue from there.Ethernet (n): something used to catch the etherbunny -

Here is why they wont block it: if they demonstrate they can block content, then they can potentially be liable for all copyrighted content. they must remain neutral for legal cover. They will never admit this but this is why.
