I'm a new user of registered version 1.51 of svcd2dvd. I've
converted 5 VCDs recently.
When I play the result DVD-RW in PowerDVD, the image
looks correct.
But when I play back the result DVD-RW on my Celera
standalone DVD player, the ratio of the output image looks
incorrect : it looks streched horitontally (looks fat), the
ratio is larger than 4:3. There is an extra black bar above
the image and an extra black bar below the image while the
original VCD image is full of the whole TV screen with the
correct 4:3 ratio.
I am using a NTSC TV. I toggled the "PAL/NTSC" option
during DVD menu authoring, it doesn't affect the end result.
I toggled various decoder/mux/demux options in the "option"
menu of SVCD2DVD, it doesn't affect the result. I also tried
selecting the "PAN & SCAN" optin, it doesn't affect the result.
I burnt the "NTSC Sample" and "Pan&SCAN NTSC Sample"
from SVCD2DVD website too. The "NTSC Sample" gives the
correct ratio in both PowerDVD and Celera standalone. The
"NTSC with PAN&SCAN" sample gives "fat" image in both
PowerDVD player and the Celera player.
Could anyone give some hint ? Thanks a lot!

If the original is 4:3, then it sounds like you encoded 16:9 in tmpgenc, which will add black bars to the video. To check if black bars were added, open the video in virtualdubmod , it will show you exactly what the video is made of without correcting for aspect.

It sounds like you might have selected the pan&scan option when you made your dvd.[/code]

Since SVCD2DVD always produces
"fat" DVCDs for me, I switched to TMPGenc Author
which works like a charm!
I just drag the VCD MPGs into the TMPGenc
Author "Source" pool and draw my menu and
then TMPGenc automatically handles everything for
me from re-samping audio stream to authoring
the DVD folder and burning the DVD (Just make
sure to check the "automatic resamping audio
stream according to target track" option)
The result works perfectly on my Celera standalone
with the correct aspect -- no "fat" video
any more!
I'm wondering why SVCD2DVD can't get
the aspect right but TMPGenc Author has
no problem for it. -

I tried Pan&Scan both on and off. When it's off, it's "fat" image.
When Pan&Scan is on, it's still "fat" image but becomes
zoomed.
It's probably related to the type of the VCD source. The VCDs
I try to burn are all Chinese/Koren multi-chapter TV series.
Anyway, if I just use TMPEnc Author to "drag" the original
VCD MPGs over, the "fat" problem gets fixed.
