  1. I was wondering the easiest way to go about getting some DVD clips into a format (like MPEG/avi) that I could edit using video editing software.

Are there any freeware programs available that let me convert either the whole DVD or parts of it into MPEG?

File size isn't really an issue, but I would like the MPEG file to be comparable in size to the DVD file itself, if possible.

    Thanks alot.

You will need something like DVD Decripter to rip the VOB files to your hard drive. Then you can use Virtualdub MPEG2 to do some basic editing and output to AVI. You cannot output to mpg with this program though. Both programs are freeware.

  3. Use DVD Decypter to rip DVD files to your hard drive and convert using Auto Gordian Knot to convert to avi (DivX, XviD). AutoGK does all the work for you in about four steps.
