In order for anyone to help, you must state what you think your problem is.

ummm, u don't sound like a novice ripper.. how can you say that tmpg is bad then?
are you encoding in 2pass? if so it is quite little time.. should take longer. But 12 hours isn't much even if you don't use 2pass.. did you expect to encode in 1 hour or what? -
um, i would dare say that many people would back me up when i say:
tmpgenc does not suck, and is still good, even with a single pass....

i didnt mean to offend anyone.
by sucking, i mean that every signle movie i convert with tmpg the audio is out of sync, even a dvd ripp, yet i do the exact same procedure, yet use the panasonic encoder and everything is fine.
i always check downloaded files for bad frames, i then use v.dub and cut the bad frames out manually, this assures that theres no stops in the file to knock the audio off, yet in tmpg its still out of sync, so i gave up on it.
with tmpg i can do a full movie on highest vcd settings in 2- 3 hours, but the same video file takes like 8-12 hours with panasonic,
i just wish the panasonic mpeg1 encoder had tmpg's speed
