To save yourself a considerabe amount of work, settle for stereo. Use Headac3he to convert from ac3 to wav, process in WavWorks, then encode as AC3 2 channels using ffmpeggui.

Though surely very competent, I've found the UI so beyond comprehension user unfriendly, that I've completely put that app to the side.
Take my advice - settle for stereo audio!

No, stereo is stereo. No 5.1 even on standalone. I understand if this is not satisfactory, but AFAIK, there's no "simple" (if any) solution to this.

    Its possible, but difficult.

I havn't doe this but it should work.

Use Headac3he to save each of the 6 channels out to a seperate wav file (requires 6 runs of Headac3he, one for each channel).

Now adjust the length of each wav file as required in your favouurite wav editor.

Now open the six wav files in Sonic Foundry's soft encode and re-encode to Ac3.

If you can't get soft encode (I believe it is no longer sold), there my be other software to do the trick.

Is it really worth this much work>

Ar you sure your DVD player/TV won't play NTSC. Most european equipment will play NTSC standard (S)VCD and DVD happily.

If you've got a 5.1 AC3 AVI to begin with and want to save it on DVD then simply open the file in VirtaulDub click "direct stream audio" and then on the File menu "save wav". Give your file a .ac3 extension instead of wav and voila you have extracted the audio.

Proceed to convert AVI to MPEG2 (using separate audio/video streams) by whatever method you prefer but when you import the M2V file later use the audio from the .ac3 file you've created as the audio source. NOTE: You will need to "fix" the AC3 file using BeSliced (included with BeSweet) in order for your authoring program to accept it.

The above-noted method preserves your AC3 5.1 sound without need to convert to WAV.

    .
But this does not help hamahama1 when converting from NTSc to PAL as the Ac3 file is the wrong length

...or indeed anyone who'd like to edit the audio in any way, while keeping the audio 5.1...

  12. BeSweet works fine for this but don't use the wizard - go straight to the GUI.

Convert Ac3 to Ac3 (even change the bitrate if you want) and you can change the framerate in the OTA section on the front screen.

I agree that BeSweet can be a bit daunting but it's worth the patience in trying. Sh*t if I can use it anyone can!
