At present I am capturing footage using Pinnacle DV500. I have tried to author DVDs using Pinnacle's Expression (reasonable quality but very basic authoring and a tendency to hang), Nero 6 (excellent authoring but movie seems deinterlaced or at least there is a motion issue, poor quality video and distorted sound when loud), TMPGEnc trial + its authoring package (excellent picture, distorted sound and can't get the hang of its authoring interface!) and Cinemacraft (Very good pic and sound but it will cost me!).
My basic question is how can I encode to MPEG in good quality without breaking the bank? I have Premiere 6 and wonder whether it's worth getting a third party plug in to let that do the job. Alternatively what else is out there as a stand alone? Or should I cut my losses and go for Pinnacle Liquid and its do-all solution?
Secondly what is the best authoring package? I would like to be able to use Nero as it authors simple DVDs so well - multiple menus, easy chapter setting, motion menus, slideshow function, but if I put an already encoded pice of footage in it it insists on recoding and 'filmising' it.

Any suggestions would be very welcome.

    Thanks.

    Hi chrisnewbold,

I feel your pain - I was there for a good portion of last year, until I cracked it.

Check my post out in a different topic:

It's pretty comprehensive as a rough guide, but feel free to get back if you need further help.

    Good luck...
