Question about possible Bad Media

After reading many of the comments on this forum, I am still confused about a few things. I've had some stuttering problems with some movie backups. At first I thought it may be the labels, now I am not sure. Let me some throw out a few scenarios any and all comments would be appreciated.

FUJI DVD+R 2.4x NEC-1100A NERO 6

a) labeled disc stutters intermittently on Toshiba SD-4900, no problems on Sony 325, no problem on computer dvd drive

b) Unlabeled disc stutters on 4900 again no problem on 325, no problem on computer dvd drive.

If I do a surface scan using Nero, the discs show read errors (can this be caused by a label??) Is the Sony that much better at error corrections?

Have burned over 50 backups, most have no problems and most are labeled, but if I could prove that it's all being caused by labels I'll stop.
Just seems like strange results.

I've had the same problem on movies skipping - on most of them the skipping stops if I remove the label - so I'm playing it safe now and dont label any of my dvd's
Some say labels dont make any difference, but for me it definately caused the skipping.

IF you read the big thread on labels you'll see lots of people have issues with them. My question to you is this, have you ran DVDinfoPro on your disc to find out the actual manuactuer of the media?

I have like 500 DVDR's labeled and not one has a single problem in three players. Unless you have the labels really off center I don't believe that's the problem. Myself I like to make my backups look pretty and the idea of using an ink marker just turns me off.

Now I have the Epson 900 printer so most of my recent DVDR's have been printed directly (using Princo 4X DVD-R inkjet printable media) and they are awesome looking.

put simply the problem is the media is of poor quality and your dvdplayer does not support cheap dvdmedia u will have to buy taiyo yuden dvd-r to get it to play flawlessly

What's the media code on your discs Fletchdvd? Use DVDInfo Pro and let us know.

Thanks for the info so far. I meant to list the code, these are FUJI 2.4x DVD+R, most are from 50 or 25 pk spindles. The code is RICOHJPNR00. Part of my curiosity was the unreadable errors from the Nero surface scan. I had not seen anyone reporting that from labels.

That's some good media you have there. I'd say that the problem is with the labels.

To test this out, backup a movie without using a label and then run a scan on it. See if it still reports read errors without a label.

a), b), the Toshiba isn't good at reading back +R media. Change to -R media, or get a different DVD player. Some players just won't play back recorded media all that well. (There is a firmware hack to turn the 1100 into a +R/-R drive).

If a surface scan shows read errors, then the DVD-ROM had problems reading those sectors. If the labled ones show errors, but the unlabled ones don't, then either you have a cheap brand of lables, or a bad method of sticking them on.

Adding a label to a DVD adds weight, and can make the disc become unbalanced. You'll have a 50/50 chance of playing back a labled disc. Out of my 8 DVD players, 3 have problems with labled discs, 3 have no problems, 2 have a problem once in a while. Invest in a disc title printer, thermal printer, inkjet printer, or just use a sharpie.

DVD players create an abundance of heat while playing, this heat can eat the adheasive off the label, and make the sides peel. Then you'll get a whizzing noise everytime the disc is played, if it plays at all.

Really well since I also have a NEC 1100a burner, I would like to know where one may find this hack?

LOOONG thread, read through it, and find the firmware download and instructions. Make sure to read about the results from other users. It seems not all 1100 are compatible.
