  1. Anyone else here use Windows Media Centre 2004?
The last couple of days I've been converting my DVDs to DivX, problem is DivX doesn't save Meta data. I've been thinking about using WMV 9 so that when I push the "More Info" button on my remote information like what the movie is about, year released, actors, and so on pops up... But is WMV really all that good? I mean I don't care for HDD space because I have more than enough, I just want to know if the Video & Audio compression is good.

If you are a super Anti-MS user, please do not respond to this post, I want someone who knows what he/she is talking about and isn't biased because it came from MS....

Properly done WMV9 and DivX are virtually indistinguisable. The key being properly.

Ignore anything Microsoft says about WMV9, 64 kbps is not DVD quality audio. If you do a WMV9 and a DivX and make them the same size, they should look identical. Check out Doom9.org for the comparison of the current codecs, it's an excellant read. XviD wins by the way!

  3. Thanks a lot!
As much as I would prefer DivX or Xvid, WMV has some options they don't. Namely the whole Meta Data thing.

I dearly love WMV9. I absolutely refuse to install WME9 since it hoses any system you have. It's the reason I rebuilt my new system 3 times.....everytime I installed WME9 other things stopped working.

It also supports HDTV resolutions out of the box.
