    HiHi All,
Here is my delemma. I have about 30 old VHS tapes (dating from 1986-87 to 2002) and about 20 Hi-8 tapes. To capture, I currently use ADS Instant DVD 2.0 but am planning on buying a Canopus ADVC-100 (Just because.) The problem I am facing now is not with the capture itself. Though I still do not know where you find out how many frames you drop (my guess is with virtual Dub). It is with the source. These VHS tapes are old and I wish to limit the video noise/static/crap. I have read some stuff about a Dataview TBC-1000 or a Sony S-VHS VCR with a built-IN TBC. My questions are.

    1. Does the Canopus have a Built-in TBC?
    2. What would be the single best thing I can do to improve the quality of my source?
    3. Should I get the Dataview TBC-1000 or the Sony S-VHS with built-in TBC or just rely on the Canopus?
    4. Is it possible to clean the tape itself ?

Please post your suggestions!!! Any reply is appreciated. THANKS for all yor help!!!!!

the advc-100 does not have a built-in TBC

As to source improvement, probably a very good vcr or the vcr that originally recorded your tapes.

I eould get/try the canopus first as one of the other VERY important things it will do is to lock your a/v... no sync probs. If needed you can always further pursue the TBC options.

you might check out Lord Smurf's website for more TBC info : http://www.lordsmurf.com/

As to tape restoring/cleaning, can only suggest a full FF/RW "excersize" of a cassette before proceeding with capture. That sometimes helps.
