  1. I'm just starting with TMPGEnc Plus. When I tell it to go to my .avi file (Video Source) it tells me "cannot open or unsupported"

Is it something to do with its name, file size or how it was created?

    File name:Kiwi Experience Tour 1-9-04.avi
    File size: 15,507,827 KB
    Created using: Adobe Premier 6.5
Export setting: Microsoft DV AVI file type

There is another export setting I can use in Premier just called "Microsoft AVI". Shouls I try that?

It's strange because it plays on Windows Media Player and looks great.

    Any help appreciated.

    Cheers

  2. There are different type of AVI files. Those captured with my "MovieStar 5" sw require a different setting than an AVI captued with XP Movie Maker.

If you go into Tmpgenc, and select from the Menu OPTIONS/ENVIRONMENTAL SETTINGS/VFAPI SETTINGS, it will list different Encoders and Readers. See which AVI reader is listed at highest priority, move a different AVI reader to the higher priority and try again.

I am always having to switch around the AVI readers depending on my source.

  4. I tried all these suggestions. The avi was as expected when I investigated it. I had not dropped frames. However I found my solution thanks to gcutler.

In TMPGenc the OPTIONS/ENVIRONMENTAL SETTINGS/VFAPI SETTINGS codecs made the difference. I just went through each codec making it the top of the list until it worked. I foget which codec worked but it did.

Why is this not an automatic thing.

    Anyway thanks for your help.

I actually have some audio questions now as I converted the video and audio seperatley with TMPGenc. I'm posting those on the audio board.

Some CODEC readers don't work at all, others will work but not 100% correctly.

On one AVI Reader I get a total failure, on another I get success BUT 600 frames per second and on another I get everything correct (29.97 fps). So auto picking the Codec reader based on failure or success may not always lead to the correct reader. Better to manually pick I say...

  6. Oh crap. I just picked based on success. I hope I've not wasted my encoding time to find out I've used the wrong codec. The codec that worked on TMPgenc was not the one that was used to create my original .avi.

I suppose I can tell if it only worked X% by analysing the resultant mpg2 file and make sure it has the same fps and resolution as the original .avi?

Ohh well. I'll find out later on tonight.

    Thanks.
