Sony D8 camcorder defeats Macrovision when using A/D pass through feature.

    Hello everybody,

It may be an old news for somebody, but it was a big news for me because I just discovered this yesterday.

I bought LiteOn stand alone DVD recorder a month ago. I also have collection of some prerecorded cartoons on VHS that my kid likes to watch. And most of those cartoons are not available on DVDs to buy. So, I decided to transfer all cartoons from VHS to DVD using my LiteOn. I was able to record some tapes, but most of them I couldn't record. I got "Protected content" message on TV screen, and LiteOn refuesed to record. I also have a Video Clarifier box that I bought eight years ago, and it worked ok, but it didn't work on two tapes yesterday.

I also have Sony D8 camcorder TRV840 with A/D pass through feature and built in TBC. And I remember when I tried to record to D8 tape with my camcorder from Macrovision protected VHS tape, camcorder told me: "Copy Inhibit". But, then I thought what if...?

I connected VCR outputs to camcorder analog inputs. Then I connected FireWire cable from camcorder to FireWire input in LiteOn. A/D pass through function was on. There was no tape inside the camcorder. And... Bingo!

LiteOn recorded those two tapes without any problem. And video on DVD looked even better than on VHS tape, probably thanks to built in TBC.

  2. Its a good reminder, for those with camera integrated TBC make sure it is on when needed if camera has this option my D8 does.

  3. I tested my Sony MiniDV DCR-TRV11 (NTSC) and it didn't work
I tested it with Philips DVR 75/17.

  6. Hello.

My DCR-TRV120 will bypass Macrovision, even with a tape inside the transport. It also has TBC and appears to work on the passthru and not just analog 8mm tapes.
